Sinful names used by parents

My own given name, Jason, originates in Greek mythology, but I do not consider it sinful, and nor have I ever attempted to have it changed. There are other names I prefer, like Joshua (especially after I learned what its Greek form was! ❤️), but none I would change to.

Lucifer is just Latin for ‘Light-bearer’.

I named my daugher Athena 30 years ago when I had fallen away. I thought naming her after the godess of wisdom seemed kind of cool. I do not think what I did was a mortal sin but definitely bordered on that. I was a stupid kid and would never do that now. Now naming her that would be a mortal sin for me. If I had to do it over I would name my daugher Maria.
 
Would it be a mortal sin for me too or just you for some reason? Just asking because I think the general consensus of this thread is that it’s not a sin at all.
 
Naming a daugher after a false god seems like grave matter to me. If I did this today, I would be doing this with full knowledge and consent of the will.

Assuming that Athena is the female version of Athanasius as someone mentioned earlier I could see someone naming their daughter Athena after this saint and it not be sinful.

I think it is in the matter, not the name only being the matter but the “naming after xxxx” being the matter even though it seems like a circumstance.
 
What if it was combined with a saint’s name…like Athena Adele (I like alliteration)? What if you just like the name and it just happened to be the name of a pagan goddess, but you totally aren’t naming her after the goddess?
 
I do not believe that any name is a sin, and it’s ridiculous to think that. It would be sinful only to cause harm to the child.

My kids have saint names and not saint names. We have prayed about it. They have been given patrons.

The funny thing is that I know God intended their names to be their names. My child with a saint name is just the epitome of that name’s meaning. Ironically, this child’s physical features are also very close to the ethnic traces of the name. Another has a non-saint name. Somehow even though my husband and I picked the name as soon as we find the gender this child is every bit the name. Dark eyes became crystal ponds of blue, skin fair as icing, matching the name. Also every bit the ethnicity of the name despite being only very small percentage that.

The others…time will tell.

I think that at Baptism God ordains the name. It is clear to me that God wanted my children to have their names–no matter the origin.
 
There are few names, not many, that are objectionable by the Church. Most names would fall in the grey area category and therefore can be acceptable.

Having said that, parents should be more discerning in naming their children as they have to carry those names for the rest of their life. Thus can could be a concern as well.
 
If that bishop became pope, I certainly hope would change his name, and maybe if he wasn’t a pope!
 
It was my child though, my faith is ingrained enough to name my kids after a saint, or at least ask the priest if it’s a requirement.
 
Whether they were sins or not, there’s no way I could name any of my girls those names. Three of them I never heard of!
 
Then again, it’ okay to change your name if you’re not happy with it.

It would certainly lend fuel to the fire for the speculations from some of our Protestant friends that the pope is the anti christ.
