Sinfulness of Mary

Well, my point for asking this question was to see if protestants agreed that, at least, Mary had to be a very holy woman.
Then the question in my mind would be “why?” Jesus Christ was born at the “bottom of the barrel” of the socio-economic groups of the time. He called the bottom of the barrel to be His Apostles, so wouldn’t it follow that His mother should be more like a Mary Magdalene than one “full of grace”, to show forth His calling of sinners? He seems to have diverged from His M.O. when He chose His mother.
I think it was for the precise reason the Catholic Church teaches, because it was fitting that the “seed” which gave Jesus Christ His humanity would therefore be free from Original Sin, too.

SingingBeauty:
I have heard many catholics state that in order for Mary to be worthy of having Jesus dwell within her for those 9 months she would have to be without original sin. And yes, they say HAVE TO. No if - ands - or buts. So if she HAD to be sinless to carry a sinless child then logic would follow that every vessel that carried her direct line would also have to be sinless…
Mary’s role was much more than that of a mere vessel carrying Jesus within her. She was his mother. In other words, Jesus’ flesh was the flesh of Mary, his mother. Jesus wasn’t implanted within Mary without having been conceived of her. Gabriel told her: “You will conceive and bear and son…” Not “A son will be placed in your womb…” Do you see the difference? It’s vitally important for Jesus to be truly man, so one of us, and so able to redeem us.

Also, if Jesus’ mother–the very flesh from which his flesh had been formed–had been sinful, Satan could have and certainly would have made an issue of it. When he was tempting Jesus in the wilderness Satan would have used such a “fact” to try to bend Jesus to his, Satan’s, will. Jesus’ flesh had to be spotless in his humanity not just in his divinity.

Mary’s mother and her other ancestors would not have to have been without sin, too. It was perfectly possible and probable that God would and could preserve Mary from original sin and its stain without having to have done so for all those who came before her in her line. Or do we carry all the sins of our ancestors? No, we don’t.

God saves each of us by Jesus’ death on the cross, Mary included. Mary was preserved free of all sin and its stain looking forward to Christ’s redemptive act. For Christ’s redemption is not limited by time and space. If that were the case, only those who lived during his lifetime could have benefited from it. And the OT saints would have been lost.

Singingbeauty,

Mary required a savior, and Jesus was. Your logic [or lack of it] astounds. You say Mary would not have needed a savior “if she was free of original sin”. But this negates the act of God in keeping her free of original sin at the moment of her conception. Jesus saved Mary and He did so based upon His atoning act at calvary. Mary is not free of sin except by the action of God, hence a savior. The Church has thus ever taught this. Even the original “protestants” believed this.

Jesus stands both outside of linear time and a part of linear time. He, Jesus was present at the beginning of the world. God is one. The language of the Trinity can be confusing [see our Muslim friends beleive we worhip more than one God] and many people one one level understand that God is one but ptoceed to make God less than unified. He, God, could save anyone he wanted to, wants to and ever wants to at any time through out history, the present or the future.

Enoch, a man who even though he was born with the stain of original sin, 'walked all his days with the Lord" and was taken up [as in did not suffer death.] This probably means that he was able to avoid any personal sin! How awsome is that! Elijah also was taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot. Mary’s faith was far greater and far more was accepted by her in her “yes” to God. She is the ‘spouse’ of the Holy Spirit, made one with, ‘known’ by God [in the jewish sense of knowing] and the mother of the God-Man Jesus all at once.

The Ark of the old covenant carried the word of God, written on stone by God’s hand, the manna [food from heaven] that sustained the people of Isreal while they wondered into the desert and the staff of Aaron, the high priest. Read the old testament passages about the construction of [and the perfection required] this Ark. Read about how no one was allowed to touch or defile this ark. One who touched it out of fear that the Ark would fall and be damaged [as in an attempt to protect it] died as a result.

Mary is the Ark of the new covenant. She carried the Word of God Made Flesh, Jesus. She bore the Man-God who is the Highest Priest that ever will be, the One Who Was, Who Is and Who Is to Come. Mary is the faithful spouse of the Holy Spirit. Mary is “filled with the grace of God”, “highly favored” and the one who is to be “called Blessed” in every generation. God saved her at her conception because He would dwell within her. And the dwelling place of God is perfect, a holy sanctified place, free from sin.

I’m wondering exactly what the protestants on this board think of Mary. They have made it clear that they think she was a sinner…
Then they must mean Mary Magdalene.

She was indeed a very big sinner, and then she became very holy. 🙂

Mary’s role was much more than that of a mere vessel carrying Jesus within her. She was His mother.… .
Thanks for pointing that out, Della! You know, when I was Protestant, like other Protestants, I thought very little of Mary, except at Christmas. I realize now quite clearly that I thought of her simply as a *vessel! *Thats it. Just a vessel God used to get Jesus here! Yes, God needed to “use” her body, and it seemed Mary would do. How wrong that is. God is Love. He doesn’t *use *anybody. He relates! He relates in love! And He relates as in families!

And what a dignified “vessel” she is! Look at her relations!

Daughter
of the Father
Mother
of the Son
Spouse of the Holy Spirit

Obviously, Mary is relationship, and not a vessel used and set aside when is purpose is accomplished.

She is not only not set aside, but elevated, to Queenship, Because Jesus, Who is perfect, honors his Mother most perfectly. No man, not even King David, could out do Him when it came to honoring His Most Blessed Mother.

One must read this carefully so as not to misunderstand you, which I almost did! 🙂

Even while Mary was Immaculately conceived without sin, or the stain of original sin, Jesus still had to come, to be sacrificed, that the gates of heaven would be opened for all, including Mary. I have heard the statement made, that Mary was “Pre-redeemed” at the moment of her conception, even while it was 33 or so years plus her tender 15 year age (at the birth of Jesus) or about 48 years later that the redemption of mankind would be redeemed at the cross would occur in the time flow of creation. (And, of course, for those who accept Him, His gospel message, and prevail in their faith until the end of their days here on earth.)
Jesus saved Mary and He did so based upon His atoning act at calvary. Mary is not free of sin except by the action of God, hence a savior. The Church has thus ever taught this. Even the original “protestants” believed this.
If or Protestant friends wonder how it can be that Mary is “saved” in her conception, while it was about 48 years later that the moment in time would open the gates of heaven for the first time? They forget that God is timeless, and while the events above seem to be in anachronism from our limited and confined single direction of time flow.
Jesus stands both outside of linear time and a part of linear time. He, Jesus was present at the beginning of the world. God is one. Indeed! The other difficulty our Protestant friends have a hard time is how Mary can be the Mother of Jesus, who is God, thus God precedes the mother in time! It is that same anachronism that we see, but for God, He is forever in the past, present and future in the timelessness of the spiritual realm.
Enoch, a man who even though he was born with the stain of original sin, 'walked all his days with the Lord" and was taken up [as in did not suffer death.] This probably means that he was able to avoid any personal sin! And with the precedence you describe for being taken up to heaven bodily, it is no great effort to include the Mother of God to be likewise taken up!

A foreshadowing of how we see the “untouched” vessel that would bear our Lord, to be the very tabernacle for Him for nine months!

Good show, YADA!

I gotta stay out of CARM and come here more often to get good arguments! 👍

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages
call me blessed.

How could one possibly live a sinless life?

Gee, I guess it would take a lot of grace.
INdeed! And the Mother of God was Full of Grace!

Reminds me of the arguments that the original Greek should have been interpreted “highly favored daughter.”

That won’t work too well when I say my Rosary! 😃

I’ve enjoyed this discussion and thought I’d just make a couple more points. First, what the CCC says about the Immaculate Conception (i.e. Mary’s being sheilded from Original Sin) is that Mary was redeemed (by Christ’s sacrifice) from the moment of her conception. A couple Catholic posters seemed to be implying that Mary did not require a redeemer, and that implication would be incorrect.

Second, for the Protestants out there… If we accept that God is outside of time and space, why would He desgnate anyone other than a sinless woman to be the mother of the Son (mother of God)? On the same line of thinking, how could sin and the pure good of Christ so intimately occupy the same physical space (Mary’s womb)? If we believe that God is both omnipotent and omniscient, then He knew what was to come. If he knew who would carry Christ, how could He but not shelter her from Original Sin? The angel who calls Mary “blessed among women” because this was clear to him, as well, and Mary harbored no shred from the stain of sin.

By the way, isn’t it interesting that the Arc of the Covenant is missing–just disappeared into history–and Mary’s tomb is also missing. Hmmm…something to think about!

Could the Ark spoken of in Rev. 11:19 be the actual Ark? No one has been able to find it and no one knows what happened to it. It could be that God has it and it is not here on earth… and the whole Woman with the crown of 12 stars, in my findings, is not Mary but Isreal so there is no coincidence imho. 🙂
Why not both?

I’m not trying to prove anything to you here, but if you knew that God was setting up a certain congruity between the events of Adam & Eve and the events of the New Adam (Jesus) & the New Eve (Mary) what might you expect here:

Adam free from Orginal Sin until the fall
New Adam free from Orginal Sin and did not fall

Eve free from Orginal Sin until the fall
New Eve _______________________?

Thanks Bill,

Yes Mary is saved by the merits of Jesus on the cross. It is hard to write and always get the meaning clear in the words…but you understood what I was trying to say, thanks for the clarifications you made. We do not want anyone to misunderstand.

I often times think that our protestant brethren believe in a God who is “small” Jesus can save humanity, make the blind to see, the lame to walk and the dead rise, but he would not reach out at the conception of His mother and redeem her…

God could ‘keep himself free from sin’ as singing beauty woulld say but not his mother…

God wanted the the stone tablets, touched by his finger and bearing His words kept in a ‘perfect’ object, but not the womb in which He would ‘become flesh’ and enter into time as a man…

Go figure. My God loved Mary, the woman He over shadowed and who bcame His spouse. The woman who became His mother. God loves her and as One who gives ***perfect love, God loved her aundantly, saving her, preserving her and assuming her. ***

To believe otherwise, IMHO, is to not believe in the very essence of God; Love and Truth.
