Sing a New Church Into Being

Jesus is the head of the Church, but we are the body. we are called to do the work of the Lord eery day of our lives and not just attend mass. We are to spread the Gospel, take care of the poor, defend those being persecuted. Summoned in all of our diversity, summond witht he gifts God has given us, Summond to continue to build the Church anew each day by doing His work.
This is not protestant this is Catholic, this is who we are called to be, first before any other faith. If we build our church then the others will come to us.

There’s the story of St. Francis and the Crucifix of San Damiano, where he hears a voice telling him to “rebuild my church”. St. Francis took the voice literally and repaired the chapel, before realizing what the message really meant.

As I said, the issue is not renewing the Church, or rebuilding, but rather bringing a new Church into being. This past Pentecost we celebrated the birth of the Church, and that was done by the power of the Holy Spirit. There will never be another Church brought into being, and that was done by the power of the Holy Spirit.

I’m sorry but it looks like you’re backtracking. You asked to be shown where the Church says we’re to make the church anew, and you used the phrase “make the Church anew”, and now you’re saying that’s not the issue.

I think you’re reading too much into this hymn. I really don’t think a reasonable reading suggests Sister Dufner meant replacing the Church with an entirely new and distinct one, anymore than St. Pius V meant that when he said “renew the whole Church from her foundations” or Pope Benedict when he quoted him.

She’s calling on the faithful to renew the Church the way they’ve been renewed in baptism. That’s what the lyrics say. Pope’s and saints have said the same.

I don’t think it’s a particularly deep hymn but I don’t think it’s worth getting worked up over it either.

It’s interesting you don’t seem to get the whole “sing a new church” imagery. Have you read “The Silmarillion”? Tolkien used the idea for his Creation Story in the first part of the book. The “Music of the Ainur” is about how the world was created through the song of the Ainur. I wonder if that’s where Sister Dufner got the idea for that line. Maybe she’s a J.R.R Tolkien fan.

You’re playing with words. How are “new” and “renew” very different?

The two terms are have quite different meanings. that is why I am not back-tracking. When a couple makes there marital vows, it is a vastly different effect Sacramentally then when they renew their marital vows. The same is true for Baptism. The first time is a Sacrament. After that, the renewal is a sacramental. All of these are vastly different in the economy of salvation. Likewise it is only the Holy Spirit who once for all time “sang a new Church into being” on Pentecost, for only God can bring anything into being.

I did not backtrack. I truly do not see quotes about renewing the Church as even remotely connected to the lyrics of this song. If you do, fine. You sing the song. ** I **will not and my parish is better for it. I will take an attitude that I see as putting me on par with God.

Good, that puts you in a position of recommending the Adoremus hymnal in your parish and diocese. Donate all the Gather hymnals to the local Episcopal diocese. A win/win for everybody! Then you can sing Come Thou Font of Every Blessing for the opening hymn, everyone can enjoy the familiar tune and the lyrics will be Catholic!

Oh come on. How are new and renew different? New is to create a new object from what has hitherto not existed. Renew is to get the old one fixed up to where it should be. If she didn’t mean the former rather than the latter I’d be very surprised. And the chances of her being a JRRT fan are slim and none. Read his letters, he would not have loved any of this kind of new age pap.

We let God know how rich we were in our diversity again yesterday. I think one of my New Years resolutions is going to be to find a new parish which is Catholic and not so rich in diversity.
