well, I sort of solved the problem, but again, I Don’t care for the version of the Gloria music used at our church. I like the one they sing at our Newman Center at the university though.
It is not supposed to be a refrain song.but it seems there is a variation of the music for the Gloria. if it is to be sung, i wish there was one version of it. i do not like the music they use for the Gloria at our parish. i don’t want to make anyone mad, but when those of the charismatic background start twirling their outstretched arms and hands during the Gloria it is a bit much for me.
Properly, yes. However, approved texts are written with the “refrain” repeated a number of times vs. a through composed version in so many compositions. I think this is because the GIRM allows for many ways of singing the Gloria, so why not the repeat:It is not supposed to be a refrain song.
Ahh, the music director’s dilemma: Try to please everyone, but that’s an impossibility. I jest of course, but we do our best. The funny thing is that your “friend” obviously loves it though. Glad you have the issue under control.well, I sort of solved the problem, but again, I Don’t care for the version of the Gloria music used at our church. I have yet to hear one, since the changes of a couple of years ago, that complements or exemplifies, rather than detracting . . . (but then, it’s less than half a dozen times a year . . .)I like ours, but don’t like the one at the Cathedral. It’s hard to sing.
OK, I have a challenge for you this weekend: During the Gloria, close your eyes and either sing (if you normally do sing), or listen and just concentrate on the words and pray them, trying to close out the charisma of the other people who annoy you during this time. You’ll gain two things: You will actually hear the hymn of praise with a different feeling and hear every word that you normally hear but they won’t be just words; and, you’ll be self centered and not be annoyed. Otherwise, you are just hearing the Gloria as background music as you think, “she’s swaying again, what do I do; her hand is going to hit me.” Don’t let others try to control your worship.yes, my friend and 5 others. the other 250 at that Mass perhaps not so much.
My response was merely to give you a peaceful option, something that I would do if I was in the pews. I realize that you probably have no issue with the Gloria itself, but was concerned what to do with the distraction. What you do during the Lord’s Prayer and Peace is a personal preference; no problem.i like the words of the Gloria - i don’t have anything against the Glofia itself. i just don’t care for the music we use to sing it.
the Mass i am going to now is a Mass they added and many Sundays they don’t have musicians yet so it is spoken and i am perfectly happy with speaking the Gloria rather than singing it. at least at this Mass there is no one swaying with outstretched arms twirling their wrists.
if parishoners want to pray that way it is fine. i get the feeling if someone gave them pom poms or scarves they would twirl those as they sang the Gloria.
i am one of those that doesn’t like holding hands during the Our Father or shaking hands during the Peace Be With You either.
Glad to hear. Thanks for the update!Update---------We sang the Gloria tonight at Mass
