Singing during Consecration?

Yesterday during the consecration, our priest began chanting/singing. I assume he did it because it was Christ the King Sunday but it struck me and everyone else by surprise because this particular priest is normally very orthodox. Can someone tell me if this was acceptable?

This is perfectly allowable, as the Holy Father, himself, has chanted it on a previous occasion. In fact, the musical notes for the various Eucharistic Prayers are printed in the Sacramentary (Roman MIssal). By the way, the preface can be chanted (sung). My PV likes to do that all the time. The Holy Father also does that as well.

What is not allowable is having the celebrant accomapanied by a musical instrument. This means no organ, no piano, no guitar while he is chanting the Eucharistic Prayer.

Now, the organist can play a note to cue the celebrant for the Mysterium Fideum (Let us proclaim the mystery of Faith), but that’s it.

Anciently, the entire Canon/Anaphora was chanted. In fact, it was uneard of to say holy words, whether in prayer or in scripture, in Christianity, Judaism, or any religion, for that matter, until the development of the missa privata (a mass deprived of its ceremonies, aka “low mass”).

My pastor has a beautiful voice and always chants the Eucharistic prayer. I love it! It makes it clear that these are not simple words he’s saying, but a prayer that bridges heaven and earth.

Whew!! I figured it was ok since he doesn’t break the rules!

He has a beautiful voice and it sounded really good but when it happened you could tell it shocked everyone!
