Singing During Distribution of Ashes

I am a bit confused as to how the singing is to proceed during ash distribution.
The people could all chant the given antiphons on a straight tone, or someone could cantor them (as in the responsorial psalm). The microphone we use, however, is on the ambo.
Does anyone know if it is permissible to use the ambo for this situation as I know there are directives limiting its use.
Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
 
Hmm,

Our choir sings hymns from the choir area as usual (as we do with the entrance/prep.gifts/communition/etc) during the distribution of ashes.
 
Song of Abandonment and others sung by choir at one Mass and quiet meditative solo music at the other.
I’m not sure this is even an issue, or why it would be?
There’s no directive for music during distribution of ashes. Ot just keeps people quiet…
 
From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal:
“309. … From the ambo only the readings, the Responsorial Psalm, and the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet) are to be proclaimed; likewise it may be used for giving the Homily and for announcing the intentions of the Universal Prayer. The dignity of the ambo requires that only a minister of the word should stand at it.”
 
The Roman Missal has for Ash Wednesday, in describing the distribution of ashes:

“Meanwhile, the following are sung:
Antiphon 1 …
These may be repeated after each verse of Psalm 50 (Have mercy on me, O God).
Responsory …
Another appropriate chant may also be sung.”

Does that mean after these are over, or, in place of these?
 
Today, ashes were distributed while the Choir sang some hymns from our Mass Hymn book. I cant remember which songs though.

The small Organ was played instead of the big Pipe Organ.

Hi St. Annes,

I used to be involved with the Music ministry in my last parish.

I was a Cantor and a Psalmist. I would go up on the ambo to sing the Psalm at Mass.

Otherwise, there was a music stand with a microphone that was used for all other singing when I was there as a Cantor. The stand was by the choir section at the front of the church.

I think “Another appropriate chant may also be sung” means in place of the antiphons and responsory given.

The Latin in the Roman Missal for “Another appropriate chant may also be sung” is “Cani potest etiam alius cantus aptus.”
