Can someone confirm when we can sing “Joy to the World” - a friend of mine is telling me that we cannot sing it on Christmas Eve, even at the end of Midnight Mass. She says that it can only be sung starting on Christmas Day because Jesus has actually been born then. However, my sister-in-law cantors at her parish, and they always sing it at the end of Midnight Mass. (Neither of these Masses is actually at midnight; they start at about 10:30 pm and end close to midnight.)
Every year our music director has the choir sing “Go Tell it on the Mountain” as our closing hymn, and my family is so disappointed that we don’t sing “Joy to the World.” Thanks!
The three Masses on Christmas Eve fulfills the obligation of Christmas Day Mass.
I can certainly understand your disappointment. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with
Joy To The World being sung on Christmas Eve Both songs are edifying but I too would prefer Joy to the World because it sounds more vibrant and resounding of celebrating Christ’s Birth.
**Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.
Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.**
