Yep! EVERYTHING gets sung or chanted, except the sermon.

When I attend a Byzantine Divine Liturgy (Romanian Catholic), everything is chanted except the - sermon; creed; the prayer before communion (O Lord, I believe and profess that You are truly Christ,…). I can’t recall if we chanted or recited the Our Father. I must admit that it is a definite disruption to go from full chant to recitation and back again.

Hi VAC, I have been lurking on the CAF for a while now, learning much. Yours was the first question that made me want to reply. The Byzantine Catholics are not Roman Catholic, but they are Catholic, under the primacy of the Pope. I was born and raised a Ukrainian Catholic and sang in the choir for many years. We never used any musical instruments; only the human voice could be used to praise God. My DH is of the Latin Rite (Roman Catholic) and has often attended Divine Liturgies (Masses) and always comments on how beautifully the entire congregation sings in harmony. I wish we lived closer so we could attend more often. The Roman Catholic Mass just doesn’t seem to involve the congregation as much, but it still has what I need… the Eucharist.

Depends. The Byzantine tradition has two groups.

The Eastern Byzantine Catholics, who are as Catholic as I am. They are part of the Catholic Church, and any Catholic can attend the Liturgy there and have the Sunday obligation fulfilled.

The Eastern Orthodox, who are not fully part of the Catholic Church. They went into schism in 1054 - primarily due to argument over the Papacy and a handful of other issues - and we have remained separated to this day. While they have valid Apostolic Succession and Sacraments, unless unable to attend a Catholic Liturgy their Liturgies do not fulfill the Sunday obligation.

I read an article once about the chanting in this region in the rural areas. It stated that the members of the churches there had no hymnals, everyone just knew the chants - and their parts in it (i.e. those with low voices provided the bass line).

That’s the case even in the USA, especially where there are a lot of WWII immigrants in the parishes. I did have a chance to attend Divine Liturgy in the Ukraine when visiting family there. I stood, singing the same music I sang here, for 2 1/2 hours and didn’t notice the time at all. An ordination took place right after the Liturgy; the new priest’s mother had embroidered his vestments with her own hand.

The churches were always packed and many went to worship daily.

At Mass today the priest said a few lines of the creed, such as “Do you believe in God the Father Almighty, his son Jesus Christ,” and the people responded with “I Do.” That was very different for me. I think I would prefer to sing it.

Funny, The same thing happened at my Church today. I wonder whats going on.

In a Traditional Catholic Mass it is chanted either by the priest or the choir.

Most of the time we sing it during a Vietnamese Mass. I always love it and I miss it since I have attended a Vietnamese mass about a year now.
