What books, tapes, websites, have good teachings on marraige and what it is, what it should be, it’s meaning, how to deal with it etc.

It’s kinda weird, I always wanted to get married, but I guess I was laid back about it. But, recently this has really gotten into my head. I feel now as if I have to pray to Jesus about it. I kind of feel funny about it, I never really thought about praying about it. I don’t know what’s gotten into me. It feels almost as if someone is urging me to pray about marriage. Maybe not necessarily to get married, but to get a discernment and focus for the future.
I don’t know what Jesus has planned for me, but I told Him that I would try to understand it more.

Hi,
There is a great book called Love & Respect by Emmeritt Eggrich(sp?) He also has a video series. I watched the video series in Sunday School class and he was hilarious:D I reccomend watching the video. Everything this man says is right on:thumbsup: I have been married 16 years and I was convicted on many points he made about respecting your husband.

I think every newlywed should have this in their book or video collection.👍

Here’s a link to Ave Maria Singles’ “store” page, i.e., a great list of resources that you could either buy there or on Amazon or find at your library:

avemariasingles.com/Ave-Maria-Single-Catholics-Resources.cfm

They list books, CDs, videos, magazines. There are several categories: bible study, courtship, marriage & family, etc.

There’s also this site: The Road to Cana:
www.roadtocana.com
“Road to Canaprovides resources that will help any Catholic single man or woman (whether never married, divorced and annulled, widowed, with or without children) become “marriage material” and better prepare for meeting that one person they are praying for when God puts that person in their path.”

The Good News about Sex and Marriage by Christopher West
Marriage Is for Keeps
Naked without Shame: Theology of the Body Explained (CD) series by Christopher West
Three to Get Married by Fulton Sheen
Created to Be His Helpmeet by Debi Pearl*
The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman*

These last two are not Catholic, but are excellent books. I highly recommend all of them :). My DH and I read/listened to all of these while engaged and it helped us prepare all the more for marriage. Also, there’s an excellent talk by Christopher West on Womanhood if you go to his website and look in the resources.

I might go out on a limb and say you may want to save some of the more sensitive reading for when you are closer to marriage, but I recommend
“Love and Responsibility” by JPII,
“Life Giving Love”, by Kimberly Hahn,
“Theology of the Body” by JPII or Christopher West’s “Naked without Shame…”,
“Three to get married” by Fulton Sheen
All of the Church’s documents on family etc
All of the Sections of the Catechism related to marriage
Canon Law’s sections on marriage

In addition to the above mentioned books I suggest

For Better… Forever by Dr. Greg Popcak
Date or Soul Mate by Dr. Neil Clark Warren

I’m glad there’s all these materials. Thank you all for your recommendations.

Adding…
“The ABC’s of Choosing a Good Husband/Wife” by Steve Wood

I wouldn’t recommend this book to a woman over the age of 25 or one who is out of the house, on her own. It was very simplistic and geared towards teenage girls living at home with their parents or in college.

What you’re asking isn’t strange at all. It’s the Holy Spirit speaking to your heart.

I recently began to see a priest about Vocational Direction (vs. Spiritual Direction). He expressed that when couples come to him for marriage prep., they just walk in and say they want to get married.

His first question to them is, “Have you actually discerned that you are CALLED to marriage?”

He is referring to individual discernment, understanding, for a woman, what it means to be a wife and mother, and for a man, what it means to be a husband and father, and how they are going to live out those roles in union with God’s will. In a nutshell.

I also am looking for good reading because I’ve been directed to do so!

God bless you as you discern your vocation. Most of us don’t get the prompting of the Holy Spirit to tell us to read up on it…we have to rely on someeone else to hit us over the head and order us to do so!

I have found the web site www.godofdesire.com to be very helpful in discerning a call to marriage. The author’s unique approach walks you through all of the stages of relationships–the first date, exclusive dating, engagement, etc.–and squashes all of the modern-day confusion that seems to accompany each stage. This site is especially geared toward those who wish to overcome sexual sins, but I’d recommend the dating advice to all Catholics who are seriously interested in marriage.

I second the “Three to Get Married” (Sheen) recommendation.

Also:
  • “Marriage a Path to Sanctity” by Abad & Fenoy (Scepter)
  • “Covenanted Happiness” by Cormac Burke (also Scepter)
    and an absolutely charming book–
  • “By Love Refined” by Alice von Hildebrand (Sophia.)

My boyfriend and I both just read “Theology of the Body for Beginners” (Christopher West) and loved it. So inspiring 🙂
