Lately, I’ve been reflecting more on the challenges that I’ve been facing in the single life and one of them boils down to cultural difference. I am a convert and I come from a cultural background that is not widely represented in the Church. As a result, I fear that it may be even more difficult for me to find a spouse if I am indeed called to marriage. To make matters worse, I live in an area where parishes (and, by extension, social activities such as 20s/30s events) are extremely divided in terms of ethnicity. This is also part of the reason why I gave up on online dating. I feel as though in a situation where there are many choices available and it could be any one, it is quite unlikely that a man would “go out of his way” so to speak. And rightfully so-- everyone has the right to decide how open they are to such relationships. I want to be honest with myself in considering the degree to which this may be a factor, as it will help to temper my expectations.
Are there any other women out there (single or married, especially converts) who come from cultural backgrounds that are not majorly represented in the Church (not necessarily racial, because being a Filipino Catholic would not be the same as being, say, a Japanese American convert)? Do you think it reduces/reduced the likelihood of your finding a spouse? And if you are from a group that is more widely represented, do you find that most people want to “keep it in the family” so to speak?
Meditating on the first reading from today’s Mass in the meantime (if this is on your mind as well, or just single frustrations in general, check it out…especially Sarah’s prayer for death)…
