I have a mormon friend who told me that if a woman doesn’t get married in this life, that she will be given a husband when she gets to heaven and that that is her consolation.

If she’s really, really good, she might get “assigned” to be the second (or third, or whatever) wife of a righteous priesthood holder, who got married and paid his dues to the Mormon corporation.
Doesn’t matter, because most (normal) Mormons realize that this is as valid as heaven, hell, purgatory, limbo and all manner of other Catholic nonsense that doesn’t exist either.

Well, we have our own made up fairy tales to scare our fellow Mormons, and you guys have your made up fairy tales to scare other Catholics.
We like to scare young girls into getting married as soon as possible, and cranking out new Mormons by the bushel load, with nonsense stories about being assigned as a plural wife in the nonexistent hereafter. You guys scare Catholic girls with nonsense stories about a nonexistent hell, in order that they won’t take the pill or get abortions, for all the same reasons.
The reality is that we’ll both end up exactly the same place after death, so all these stories about where we’re going are about as worthy of our time as, say, bigfoot and space aliens.

the mormon teaching on this is only if through no fault of her own does she remain single OR if through no fault of her own she marries a man who “doesn’t make it” THEN she will be assigned as a plural wife to one of the worthy men. in the meantime she is expected to seek out worthy single mormon men to find the man she is “supposed” to marry.

Well, I’m open to the possibility that I’m wrong. I like to live dangerously and I suppose in 50 years or so I’ll see.
Do you have any evidence for the existence of Hell, purgatory, limbo? If not, no big deal. It’s the same amount of evidence that Mormons have for their ideas. One is as likely as the other.

In other words, if not a mate here, then a mate in heaven will be a possibility. It does make sense. Eternity is a long time to be single if one wishes to be married.

I actually like that book, despite the goofy parts.
But I didn’t like some of the LDS doctrine expressed in the book. It says that after you are forgiven for a sin, if you commit the same sin again then the guilt for the older occurance comes back on you and you are guilty of it all over again. That is contrary to the bible, which teaches that when God forgives sin, He “remembers it no more”; He doesn’t put it on the shelf and save it for later just in case you screw up again.The LDS doctrine is a disincentive to repent, especially in those areas where one is particularly weak. The biblical teaching is much more comforting - a fresh start every time I repent.

I can respect that. There are other critiques of Kimball’s view. Feminists dislike that book for various reasons, and I respect their positions also.It is a well-written book, and I always liked SWK - he reminds me of Yoda.

I guess the reason I liked it (besides the funny sojourns into Sasquatch territory) was due to the fact that it opened my eyes as to the concept of making amends, rather than just saying “I’m sorry”. As a teenager, I seemed to need some of that.

I’ve heard Brigham Young got the adam-God notion from Swedenborg also. Don’t have a source, but I know Paul Toscano has talked about it in Sunstone at some point.
