Single parent adoption?

I heard a rumor once of a Priest turning away a single woman with 4 adopted children, but I have no details and these things go under the cloak of secrecy or personal privacy very quickly. Nobody speaks to this being covered by any published policy or doctrine. It seems odd now with the new Pope, Francis, previously speaking out in support of children of single parents of all sorts. Maybe there is something else going on, but will we ever know? Yes, the truth generally always leaks out. We are just waiting . . . .

This is my personal opinion so take it for what it’s worth (also with the caveat that I’m not sure of the Church’s position, if any). I think it’s perfectly fine for a single person to adopt an older child. I believe that babies should be given the best chance at life and to me that’s a two-parent family. However, there are so many older children (or children with special needs) that are deemed unadoptable or more difficult to adopt because they’re not the cute little baby, that that is indeed a true blessing – to rescue a child and give it a family.

I agree with most of what you said above. I have been involved with 3rd world adoptions as well. Unfortunately, I think the primary reason that “kids are piling up” is the ridiculous cost, the tortuous paperwork and delays, as well as the corrupt systems in those countries. It is heartbreaking for couples to go through total hell to adopt children from 3rd world countries, only to have the adoption fall through or the country to “close” their adoptions right in the middle of the process.
.
Believe me, its not any easier to adopt in the US. Our two foster children have been in foster care for over two years - the parents of one were horribly abusive and nearly killed one of thier children through neglect and abuse. The other was abandoned with strangers when the mother hit the road on the run from police. Two years later these DNA donors still control the lives these children.

I think single parent adoption is a loving thing to do to rescue a child. No, it will not be easy and a two-parent home is ideal, however we live in a messed up world. I think singles who want to be parents but haven’t been able to marry still have a lot to offer a child in need.

I would seriously consider adoption if marriage doesn’t seem to be in the cards. If I can’t be a wife, I hope I can still be a mother.

My husband and I tried for many years to have a child. We were unsuccessful in doing ago. After some time passed, we decided to get into Foster Care. We had more than several children pass through our lives. We were then asked if we would consider taking a very ill little girl with severe Spinabifida. We had no question about it. She was 2 years old but at an 8 month old level. We had to learn many medical procedures in caring for her.
If you would like to adopt a child and are single, I applaud your effort. There are so many children who need homes and love. It might be difficult in the way it is for some single parents, but if you you want to love a child, do it and God Bless You.
