I understand that singularity basically means to try to “stand out” from the group, to be noticed, particularly in making a “show” of a person’s spirituality or devotion.

However, it leads me to ask where does being an example to others play out with singularity?

Aren’t we to consciously ensure we are not being scandalous to others, but positive and good examples? I’m a bit confused.

Peace.

It has to do with the intention. If you do good things or put on a good face with the intention of being looked upon favorably, or of obtaining notice, you have received your reward. Your pride is blocking any merit from these goods acts.

If, however, you are good simply because God wills it, and you wish in every way to do His will, you don’t need to think about good example or singularity at all. Just do good, not caring for the way others think of you, but only of how God sees you. You will BE a good example then, whether or not you realize it.

Singularity to mean means ego driven pride, where we create an image of ourselves to impress people, but it’s a false image, because the ego has built a defense wall against accepting our true selves. We attach ourselves to these ego identities in various ways and religious pride is often included for those who find religion as well.

Part of the spiritual journey is self-knowledge, and this comes as our Lord Jesus Christ, blesses us with transforming grace, which strips away our false ego-identities and helps us become the person God had in mind when he created you.

St John of the Cross wrote much about detachment from inordinate appetites, which we know today as ego attachments, in order to move toward holiness.

Thank you for your replies. I understand the difference now. Being good for God’s sake and not for getting noticed. The good example is fruitful when we do it for God and singularity when we do it for our pride (unfruitful).

Peace.
