Recently, I’ve been routinely feeling like I’m sinking into my bed when I’m trying to fall asleep at night. I close my eyes, and say my prayers. Then it happens after I finish praying. When I realize it’s happening, I freak out and open my eyes. It’s really strange, and it feels like my body is numb and far away when it happens. I don’t know if it’s because I’m on the verge of falling asleep, or something else, but I’m not sure. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Not really, but I can get a drifting feeling when I am very tired and it can startle me, so I wake up.

Why not keep saying the rosary silently once you go to bed? I find that I can fall asleep this way without any disturbances. Prayer can be very soothing and relaxing.

Not really that way.

But we lose our muscle tone while going to sleep, which is why we lose our sense of gravity (the pressure on our muscles is what we feel) and also why we say “falling” asleep.

Something similar happens to me once in a while. I think it’s called sleep paralysis and to me almost feels like an “out of body experience” where I can’t wake up for a couple seconds when I realize what’s happening. The last time it happened a few nights back I tried to wake up and it took a few seconds before I was able to move… as if my spirit had to come back to my body or something (that’s what I saw anyways - maybe the whole thing is just a bad dream?). 😦 It sometimes goes in hand with a strange dream, which sadly I’m rarely able to remember much of. It’s a very odd and not so fun feeling.

I have had this happen a few times, and it does feel like an out of body experience. My body goes numb and can’t move. A few times it has been with a strange dream. I do not think it is anything spiritual, but probably sleep paralysis.

👍👍

Sleep paralysis is physiological, not spiritual. It arises from our muscle tone being released from our bodies while asleep.

Normally, our movement is restored before our minds awaken, but if the mind comes back on first, we awaken unable to move.

It happened to me, where I woke up and my hands wouldn’t move. I knew what this was and went back to sleep.

I’m not saying it’s spiritual but at least the dream I was having made it seem so. In what I can only call a dream I could see my body and I was getting closer and closer to it very quickly just before I woke up, though when I tried to move it took a few seconds. This is what made it seem like an out of body experience. It happened right after I realized I was having a bad dream and tried to wake up. Strangely it happened to me two nights in a row this week.

Yes, just about every night, right before I fall asleep. It’s perfectly normal.

The times I experienced sleep paralysis (it used to be fairly frequently) I was already asleep and then woke up (at least my brain did) and I found I could not move. Sometimes this was accompanied by a sensation of pressure on my chest, or a sense of fear or something evil. However I did realize, even in that state, what was happening, and usually it ended when I allowed myself to fall back to sleep and wake up normally.

It’s fairly normal and involves your body beginning to fall asleep before the mind does. That’s all. Don’t freak out, and use the opportunity of awareness to praise God for the gift of sleep. Deep sleep is when the body makes repairs.

Hmm, that is strange…just 2 days ago, I had this dream where I was lying in my bed and all the sudden, there was hundreds of little arms reaching up thru the bed trying to grab onto me and pull me down, not sure where they were taking me, but I was VERY scared in the dream, I called out for help, but I woke up then…I had to get out of bed for a half hour and sit there thinking about this dream, even today, i can still see those arms reaching up and grabbing me, trying to pull me down!! Usually the details of dreams fade very quickly, but this one has not, so Im thinking it may be a warning.

It truly made me wonder if when people die and they are in a state of mortal sin…maybe this is how they are literally pulled down to hell, by lots of arms grabbing at the person, and if they died in their sleep, in bed, its possible this could really happen, they would be pulled down, thru their bed and on to hell!!!

GEEZ, I dont like thinking about this, but cannot get all those arms grabbing at me out of my head.
