1862 One commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law, or when he disobeys the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent. 1863 Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul’s progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God’s grace it is humanly reparable. "Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness."134
While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins. But do not despise these sins which we call “light”: if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them. A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fills a river; a number of grains makes a heap. What then is our hope? Above all, confession.135
1864 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven."136 There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit.137 Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

Hope this helps. :tiphat:
They ascribed the works of the Holy Spirit to the devil (the unpardonable sin)…this is not done by believers…people go to hell by unbelief…

May God Help Us.

Could you please elaborate on what you mean that “they ascribed the works of the Holy Spirit to the devil”? Who is they, what did they ascribe, and which works are “they” talking about?

As for the unpardonable sin, it is the sin of not accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord God.

So from the Catholic understanding, when someone misses church on Sunday, they will go to hell if they die because they committed mortal sin (listened to Father Mitch say this on the radio). This fosters a works-based salvation system.
As opposed to the Protestant position that one cannot lose one’s salvation which means that after saying the sinner’s prayer (see the OP), the newly “saved” can go about his business pretty much as before secure in the knowledge that he will go to heaven GUARANTEED because salvation cannot be lost.

:nope:

The Catholic understanding of Mortal Sin is wrong…the idea that someone can offend one time and they go to hell is not scriptural.
The PRACTICING of this type of sin (1 Corinthians 6 and elsewhere) is what the Bible is talking about…That is your errant opinion Craig, but that is not so.

Every n-C preacher I have ever heard has made a case out of the idea that even one sin sends a soul to hell, and that, in the case of a baptized believer is not so at all.

However, when the Word of God actually tells you that some sins are more grave than others (Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is just one example.) as in … 1st John 5:16 He that knoweth his brother to sin a sin which is not to death, let him ask, and life shall be given to him, who sinneth not to death. There is a sin unto death: for that I say not that any man ask. 17 All iniquity is sin. And there is a sin unto death.

The oversimplified teaching on sin by n-Cs is where the error is.

I don’t see how you can say that all sin is unbelief, when in fact St. James says, "14: but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
15: Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown brings forth death. " (James 1) I don’t see anything in there about unbelief…it looks a lot more like just plain old willful rebellion. That doesn’t negate belief…it just means that the person has given in to his own will and literally chosen to go his own way.

Question: What hath this to do with the OP’s topic of “Sinner’s Prayer not Biblical Evangelical Admits”?

Most of the Pentecostalists that I personally have encountered would agree with the article’s author. Only on the internet have I encountered what he calls “easy believism.”

Your forgetting about our belief in the purification of Purgatory but that would get us totally off topic. 😉

It’s “faith working through love”. Your trying to separate everything and make it an either/or situation when it’s both/and.

Murder is not the same as calling your brother a jerk, even though both express the emotion of anger.

Does not obey is translated from the Gk apeitheō, literally reject belief or refuse to believe, thus the translation, “does not obey.” The disobedience is that they continuously refuse to believe
(it is a participle) cf Jn 3:18.
According to my Strong’s it says that apeitheo means:
to disbelieve (willfully and perversely)
disobedient
obey not
unbelieving
This word means “to refuse to be persuaded, to refuse belief, to be disobedient”.

BTW, persuade (according to the dictionary) means
1 : to move by argument, entreaty, or expostulation to a belief, position, or course of action
2 : to plead with

Out of curiosity where did you get your definition from?

Total non sequitur there Atemi.

Since what you said is not a Catholic teaching your allegation is moot.
Where did I ever say it was “Catholic teaching”?

It is the teaching of God’s Word.

If you choose to believe that Jesus Christ did not die for your venial sins, then that is your business.

If He did die for your venial sins, who are we to dare to declare them not mortal?

:juggle:

How long can Atemi keep juggling these kinds of statements?

Atemi sez:
All sins are mortal. :tsktsk:

The Bible sez:
“If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.” (1 John 5:16-17)

You can’t back up this erroneous belief from the New Testament Alone. Jesus Christ died for everyone it is not up to us to tell Him He didn’t. All you must do is believe and practice your faith once you accept Him.
Did He die for Esau the way He died for Jacob?? Pharaoh??

Romans 9:11-23 NAS95 11 for though the twins were not yet born and **had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose ***according to His choice *would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER.” 13 Just as it is written, “JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED.” 14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15 For He says to Moses, “I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION.” 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. 19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?

Acts 13:48 NAS95 48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

1 Peter 1:2 KJV 2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

Ephesians 1:4 NAS95 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love

Acts 16:14 NAS95 14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the **Lord opened her heart to respond **to the things spoken by Paul.

Romans 8:28 KJV 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

John 15:16 KJV 16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Judas was not chosen - the other 11 were…

John 13:18 NAS95 18 "I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’

His death wsa sufficient for all but only efficient for those who would believe - the elect.

Linkowski,

How in the world can you say Judas wasn’t chosen? Jesus personally selected him as one of the orginal 12. Where in Scripture does it say that Judas was damned for all eternity? The fact is we don’t know!!! You can NOT with ANY certainty say you know someone is in hell. For all we know Hilter himself could be in heaven. You don’t know his or Judas mind at the time of their deaths.

Linkowski sez:
Judas was not chosen.
The Bible sez:
John 6:70
Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”

Hope this helps. :tiphat:
This is a very clear example of people that want to take things out of context and not read other scriptures in light of other clear passages. Ofcourse, he was chosen in the sense that he was chosen as one of the twelve…BUT…there is another sense of chosen…the elect are chosen in a much different way and I already showed you…Judas was not chosen in accordance with John 13:18…

John 13:18 NAS95 18 "I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’

Chosen as an apostle…not chosen as one of the elect…Chosen but not chosen.

Jesus prayed for Peter…He did not pray for Judas…

Luke 22:31-32 NAS95 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

Hebrews 7:25 NAS95 25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

1 John 2:1 NAS95 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

This is a clear example of how people want to try to explain away the text that is before them so that it fits their own theology.

That figures. Jesus didn’t really mean, “Unless you eat my body and drink my blood, you have no life in you.” Right?

He didn’t really mean that Peter is the rock.
He didn’t really mean that men have authority to forgive sins.
James didn’t really mean that we are not justified by faith alone.

It just goes on and on and on…

Essentially one cannot understand the Word of God except it agrees with their infallible interpretation…regardless of what the text says or what Christianity has taught that it means for 2,000 years.

You’re right Randy… “It just goes on and on and on…”

Linowski is right. If you cannot discern between the physical choosing for a higher purpose, and the spiritual choosing of the ones who are saved by Christ, then you should offer us an explanation.
