This is not stemming from scruples, but rather curiousity. Let’s say some person hands you a flyer with the typical “sex work is work,” or “my body my choice,” spiels of today. Lets say you rip the flyers in two to show your opposition. Would this be a sin against charity? What constitutes as a sin against charity? Christ chased men with a scourge and surely he didn’t sin.

In the case of that person handing out fliers I think you are ok to say what you think of that philosophy. As a matter of prudence I recommend not using profanity in expressing your disapproval. I also recommend not assaulting that person.

It would be uncharitable to assume that the person had any kind of intimate relationship with Christ or His Church. So we have to lead them to Him and His Bride. They are in the clutches of Satan.

Is it charitable to support everything another person stands for? Obviously not.

“Sins against charity” is usually:
• Hatred of God.
• Hatred of one’s neighbor.
• Envy.
• Sloth.
• Scandal.

I would rather say “no, thank you” and not take the fliers in the first place. If I took them before realizing what they were, I would simply throw them away, rather than tearing them up in the person’s face.

What constitutes as a sin against charity?
For me, one year I took 1 Corinthinas chapter 13 as my examine of conscience for that year. My confessor suggest I read it in many different translations of Scripture in order to help dive deeper into the words.

Honestly, that year changed me. While I am no where NEAR perfection in charity, more often I am aware of my sins against charity by having a deeper understand of what charity is, as was defined by St. Paul.
Christ chased men with a scourge and surely he didn’t sin.
Thing is, Christ is God, He knows all, sees the hearts of everyone and is the perfect judge of mankind. Until I have that gift, I am not qualified to grab a scourge.

If someone handed me a flyer that said “sex work is work”, I would try to enter into a kind, respectful discussion about the dignity of all people. Would talk about the fact that some people feel that is their only option, how we as society have failed to provide the opportunities, support, freedom.

I’d listen and hear what the person is saying. People who are handing out those flyers, people who are vocal about abortion rights, often they or someone they love has or is experiencing that issue. We must speak with kindness because we CANNOT read hearts.

I would not tear up the flyer, I would likely hand it back to them and say “I am trying to go paperless”.

What is your intent? What feelings are going through your head as you rip it up?

On a more practical level, have you accomplished anything positive and productive? Or just cathartic?

I think that yes, you risk a sin against charity. I’ve stood on the sidewalk in pro-life demonstrations. Some pro-choicers have flipped me off and torn up fliers. Others have stopped to engage in some intense but respectful dialogue. Where the latter is clearly an option, why would you choose the more spiteful option?
