Are all sins and sinners equal or treated as equal - will the heat and flames be adjusted in hell depending on the number or seriousness of our mortal sins or for that matter in purgatory - twinc

On another thread we just had a conversation about the different rewards in Heaven. I would think that since Heaven grants rewards commensurate with the works of her citizens, Hell would as well.

Of course Dante showed different levels of Hell, but I do not know if there is any official doctrine on this subject.

The Church teaches that the main punishment of Hell for everyone is eternal separation from God so even if there are other punishments they are less than the main one which applies to all.
The Church also teaches that “punishment” in Purgatory is a purification process and nothing like the punishment of Hell.

Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sin has one reward or shall I say, punishment. That punishment is death/perish/destroyed. Not hell.

John 3:16 says For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Again, either you gain everlasting life or you perish. To better understand hell, you must look at the meaning/context that it is being used in. You can’t have the preconceived notion that hell is a fiery place. Hell, in the Bible can/does have different meanings in different verses.
