Is there any sins that God can’t forgive?
Nope. :nope: God’s mercy is infinite.but i have despaired and doubted forgiveness??!!?! Am I doomed?
Right, final impenitence.I was always told that the only truly unforgivable sin is final impenitence. As long as we ask for forgiveness properly, we will always be forgiven.
The Scriptures say that Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable sin. (Matthew 12:22-32). The Church says this sin is final impenitence. Here is Jimmy Akin’s article on it from EWTN:I was always told sins against the Holy Spirit could not be forgiven, although Im not sure how sins against God and sins against the HS differ?
To sin against the Holy Spirit is when we ascribe the work of the Holy Spirit to the devil.I was always told sins against the Holy Spirit could not be forgiven, although Im not sure how sins against God and sins against the HS differ?
Could you give an example when that could happen? I cant think of any situation where someone would confuse the origin of an act to that extremeTo sin against the Holy Spirit is when we ascribe the work of the Holy Spirit to the devil.
In post #10 I posted a link to a whole article about this sin from EWTN by Jimmy Akin. I guess no one read the post.Could you give an example when that could happen? I cant think of any situation where someone would confuse the origin of an act to that extreme
All sins can be forgiven if the sinner truly repents, but …Is there any sins that God can’t forgive?
:bigyikes: Really? Despair? Resisting the known truth? All sins can be forgiven if the sinner truly repents, but …
Baltimore Catechism No. 3
Q. 433. What are the sins against the Holy Ghost which Our Lord said will not be forgiven either in this world or in the next?
A. The sins against the Holy Ghost which Our Lord said will not be forgiven either in this world or in the next, are sins committed out of pure malice, and greatly opposed to the mercy of God, and are, therefore, seldom forgiven.
From A Catechism of Christian Doctrine (“Penny Catechism”)
The Six Sins Against the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) Are:
- Presumption
- Despair
- Resisting the Known Truth
- Envy of Another’s Spiritual Good
- Obstinacy in Sin
- Final Impenitence
For those, see St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, Part 2, 2nd part, Question 14. Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, Article 2. Whether it is fitting to distinguish six kinds of sin against the Holy Ghost?:bigyikes: Really? Despair? Resisting the known truth?
