Hey guys. I am in a slight dillema here. So during Science Class a friend of mine needed to hand in his work but he didn’t finish it. So he wanted to Copy. I didn’t want to give him my paper, and was trying to stall / avoid it. But he just kept asking to give him the Paper, I felt like I was being pushed into it, but I really didn’t want to. So I gave him the paper.

Later Another student asked to copy the same paper, I responded no this time. I wish I could have siad NO earlier to.

Is this suffecient for “Grave Matter”. And would you say I had FULL CONSENT OF WILL?

Would Talking in Class, being a distraction, and disobeying clear orders from a Teacher be a sin? Would it be Grave sin?

What else should the Average, High School Student avoid?

Allowing someone to take advantage of you is not a grave manner.

Engaging in a quiet conversation with a consenting individual is not a sin.

Is there any information that I can use? That would be helpful.
I don’t think this is a mortal sin in your case, but I think it definitely can be a mortal sin in a case where people deliberately make plans to cheat, to profit from cheating (like say sell pre-written papers to students).

You didn’t want to cheat but got pressured into it by a friend, what you did was wrong but it’s unlikely to be a mortal sin.

Why was your friend able to pressure you? Why did you find it difficult to say no?

May friend got me to do it. Because he was persistent in asking me. and if I said no, then I thought He would think I was maybe to strict or rule-following or something. I didn’t want to say no to a friend I guess. The same ttype of situation occured when another friend called me to ask about a take-home quiz/test thing. I didn’t tell him the answer, only HOW to answer it. (I didn’t really know either). but I did tell him that I didn’t think it was the answer he had chosen.

See This is what I would like to know. If you plan on Cheating, Am I an accomplice if my friend asks me about some school work, and I don’t want to give them the answer, but at the same time I don’t want to say no?

How much does it take untill it becomes Grave Matter?

I’m a science teacher. 🙂

Just say no next time. Don’t sacrifice your hard work for a slacker. It’s not worth it.

It’s helping him cheat. Although he won’t have the practice and knowledge that you gained doing your work, he still leeches off off you. Don’t let him do it again. Let him take the hit to his grade that he deserves.

Alot of the “Examine you Consience” things that help people prepare for Confession, are mostly geared towards adults (Altough there are some things on the Adult list that a Teenager is capable of) IS there anything that can help Teenagers see what is and isn’t Grave matter? In School and stuff there are some Vague zones. What should one Avoid during their youth Years, what is OK?

OK, let’s see what kind of list we can come up with. 🙂

In no particular order:

Stay away from sex. Period. Alone, in your thoughts or with others.
Stay away from gossip and other school drama. Always be ready to say something good about someone who is being dissed. Change the subject if you can. Walk away if you have to.
Do your own work honestly. Don’t help others cheat.
Don’t shoplift.
Don’t spend money at the mall on things you don’t need. OK, not very often.
Try to realize that your parents might actually know more than you do and treat them with respect. Just let them finish talking and consider what they say. Ditto for teachers.
Don’t stomp around the house slamming doors.
Do the chores that are your responsibility.
Go to Mass every week and Confession regularly.
Don’t encourage or help your friends to use contraceptives or get abortions.
Don’t borrow things and not return them.
Always tell the truth. Parents especially are more upset when you lie to them than they are about whatever you lied about. The truth will set you free.
Don’t dress provocatively.
Don’t worry about people who have more material things than you do. In the end, that’s not as important as God and family. In other words, don’t envy.
Moderate your time on electronic devices. Don’t let computers, cell phones or games take over your life. Don’t text at the dinner table.
Watch your language. Especially, don’t use God’s name carelessly or in anger.
Stay away from Tarot cards, Ouija boards and horoscopes.
Pray (at least a little) every day.

Hope this is helpful. If you do all this perfectly, you can come live with me! 😉

No, you did not have full consent of the will. This would not be a mortal sin. Still, it is neverthess, an imperfect action since you did something that is harmful. We should strive to avoid this action in the future. I would certainly confess this sin.

You have a powerful conscience. That is good. But don’t stress too much. God sees your. heart. I believe he is more interested in your willingness to love God and neighbor than he is in counting every time you step outside of the lines.
Angel7;6091134:

Instead of focusing on what you shouldn’t do, concentrate on what you can do. How can you be an image of Christ’s love to your classmates. If you do that, then you will be less inclined to slip up.

Now I have new probelms…😦
  1. If we see a friend or anyone cheating on a test or quiz, or helping them cheat on a test or quiz, should we tell the teacher? (It’s hard when they are people you are friends with, or are familiar with)
  2. When we overhear someone talking about drug or alcohol use (maybe smoking too, but smoking is a bit more open) should we alert a teacher or someone? This include overhearing anything that is drug related. It might be a joke, or one of those 1 time mistakes.
If someone used a drug but said they regret it and never want to do that again, do we tell a teacher anyway?
  1. If my parents do not allow me to go To Confession. and I feel that I have commited a mortal sin (I think I have scrupulousity, I’m not certain) am I justified to lie to them? and say I’m going somewhere else? While actually, I’m going To Confess my sins?
  2. Should we avoid talking in class?
  3. Is it wrong to be embarressed/ashamed that people think of you as a rule following, Religious, very religious Catholic, (goody goody two shoes) 😦
  4. When someone uses bad language and profanity should we tell them not to?
  5. When someone “uses God’s name carelessly or in anger.” (copied that 🙂 )
should we tell them not to say that? Is it wrong to be embarressed/ashamed to tell someone not to say that? because your afraid of the opinion of others towards you (similar situation to #5)? 😦

Betsy provided a very good list. Some of the items would rise to grave matter, others in my opinion would not. Perhaps someone could separate the items into 3 groups; always grave matter, could be grave in some cases, and venial.

As for ratting on friends or others that cheat, do drugs, etc. in my opinion keep such knowledge to yourself unless what the person is doing would endanger his or someone elses life. Someone who deals drugs or pornography for example needs to be ratted out.

To be honest I see nothing wrong with this at all…morally at least. School is a sham. Copying homework is nothing and I bet your teacher knows it goes on and doesn’t care. In my opinion this isn’t even a moral issue, let alone something you could go to hell over.

but what about Drug users. and those who cheat on tests?
I’m sorry, but I was kind of hoping that my issues would be addressed more specificaly. 🙂

I don’t understand this point of view to be honest. I am not the type of person to hoard my work. If I studied hard for a test and there was some way that I could give people this knowledge that didn’t study, while they are writing their test, I would do that. I would be happy to help people do better on a test.

To be honest school is a sham. My last exam of my undergraduate college career is two weeks from today and I would want nothing more than for others to do well. I don’t even care if they do the work or not.

The way I see it is this: most of the classes that people are taking are not practical knowledge that they will need in the real world. In fact, most people forget just about everything they have studied for within weeks of taking the test, and pretty much 100% of it after a couple years when they are looking for jobs. Basically a BA says “for a few years of my life I at least had my things together a bit so that I could pass classes and stay dedicated.” Other than very specialized fields, most people aren’t going to come out of college with a whole lot more practical knowledge than when they went into it. For this reason I just think that schooling is a sham.

First let me say, you’re going to be the most unpopular kid in class… But then again
Mat 5:10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Sounds to me like you’re hitting on living the Beatitudes, and I can think of few if any greater victory than that. Now let me offer this, read the whole post and the warning at the bottom.
Now I have new probelms…😦
  1. If we see a friend or anyone cheating on a test or quiz, or helping them cheat on a test or quiz, should we tell the teacher? (It’s hard when they are people you are friends with, or are familiar with)
It’s best to start at the lowest level possible, start by having a convo with that student. Mind you I don’t know that you’ll get far, but if they are obstinant then I would move up the chain of comand as illistrated in Mat 18
  1. When we overhear someone talking about drug or alcohol use (maybe smoking too, but smoking is a bit more open) should we alert a teacher or someone? This include overhearing anything that is drug related. It might be a joke, or one of those 1 time mistakes.

Start the same way as above most certainly. In that last senario, it sounds like they’re already repentant, so I would say "you have gained your brother.
  1. If my parents do not allow me to go To Confession. and I feel that I have commited a mortal sin (I think I have scrupulousity, I’m not certain) am I justified to lie to them? and say I’m going somewhere else? While actually, I’m going To Confess my sins?
I can’t begin to tell you how terrible it is to read point 3, your parents don’t let you go??? I would go anyway!!! Why would they not let you go?
  1. Should we avoid talking in class?
At least when class has started, yes.
  1. Is it wrong to be embarressed/ashamed that people think of you as a rule following, Religious, very religious Catholic, (goody goody two shoes) 😦
Hmmmm, I can understand the emotion but you should work past that now. Blessed are the rule following religious very catholic kids 🙂
  1. When someone uses bad language and profanity should we tell them not to?
It’s good to have that conversation, so yes.
  1. When someone “uses God’s name carelessly or in anger.” (copied that 🙂 )
should we tell them not to say that? Is it wrong to be embarressed/ashamed to tell someone not to say that? because your afraid of the opinion of others towards you (similar situation to #5)? 😦
Yep, same as above only with extra emphisis as it breaks a commandment.

Warning:
Behaving like this can lead to your own personal harm. I truely hate to say it, but people really dont’ want to be told they need to rise up above sin, and they can some times respond violently. While it is very good to do what is right no matter the cost, the Church doesn’t require it in the case where you are exposing your self to grave risk. So please use caution, and evaluate whether or not doing what is right, could have serious or leathal ramifications. And if you think it’s giong to be big trouble, evaluate whether or not it might be worth getting injured, terribly.

Obviously some of these will invoke stronger reactions than others, you’ll have to be the judge. God bless and protect you.

I thought that Cheating was similar, if not the same, to stealing? right? 🤷
At least, I think so.🙂

May friend got me to do it. Because he was persistent in asking me. and if I said no, then I thought He would think I was maybe to strict or rule-following or something.
And why would this be a bad thing?

I suppose if one has ambitions to become a lost hobo, it would make sense to avoid following the rules, but if you are hoping to become a productive and happy member of society, then following the rules is part of the deal.

It’s one thing to help each other study, but each person needs to do his own tests and his own class work and homework.

My views don’t reflect those of the Catholic church, but I don’t see it as this AT ALL. What about if the person lets you cheat off of them? That is like someone giving you something and you calling it cheating. School is a joke IMO. I have been in classes for the past year and I could have learned more by going to the library…and I have done very well in school as well. The diploma is what matters.
