Sins, why so many?

Yes Masturbation is a gravely disordered act.

As to lustful thoughts and thoughts of adultery --Jesus is very clear that looking lustfully is already to commit adultery in ones heart (see Matthew 5)

It is gravely sinful.

Man when created – was not created disordered–but due to the Fall --such disordered desires and practices entered the world after original sin.

So 15 month old babies are gravely disordered?

I can no longer wrap my brain around this religion.

When a person must go to confession for simply having a thought or doing something that is natural to human nature, well…that seems odd to me. God made us this way, with the parts and the human nature that we have. The 10 commandments are straightforward, but I’d like to know who in the Catholic Church extrapolated to the degree that there are so many more than 10 commandments.

Who exactly decided on the extrapolation? I find many sins to be really reaching, taking the extrapolation to a ridiculous degree.
Let me see if I can give you a little idea of how this goes…

Jesus says Love God and Love neighbor as yourself. How much more simple and yet comprehensive can one get??

YET -

Peter says, “Lord how often must I forgive my brother - 7 times?”

And thus begins what I call the great “Yea but what if…” cycle.

It continues with the Council of Jerusalem and the issue of the mosaic law for the Gentile converts.

The Church keeps the ten commandments…
Someone asks, “yea but what if…”
The Church clarifies.
Someone else asks. Yea but what if…" (on the same or different issue)
The Church clarifies.

And on…And on…And…for nearly 2000 years. Is it any wonder that there is a long list of specifics? Yet they all stem from the Great commandments of Love.

Peace
James

It’s easy to avoid all sin if you have your eyes and your heart set solely on Christ.

So I don’t understand what you’re going on about.

A 15 month old child touching what ever parts of their bodies is well “A 15 month old child touching what ever parts of their bodies”.

A 15 month old can not commit a venial sin…let alone a mortal sin.

They could point a gun perhaps too at you and pull the trigger and kill you–but they would not sin doing so…not commit murder.

But your neighbor next door or his wife can sin mortally by murdering you with a gun!!

*try not to give guns to 15 month olds.

Everything is reasonable and makes sense in the Catholic Faith.
It can happen though that one can be seeing only part of something and thus draw incorrect conclusions…

Does this seem like “…my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” to any of you?

List of Sins

Seems like someone isn’t telling the truth, either Jesus or the Catholic Church.
There is one Truth; there are thousands of ways to lie. Man was made for Truth - hence the yoke is easier and the burden lighter than the alternative to that Truth.

well not all sin (though one could avoid in a sense each deliberate sin)…we will have some venial sins in life…

(unless God gives you a very special grace)

This site does not seem to authentically represent the Catholic faith. Whoever wrote this site seems to be leaning closer toward schismatic groups though may be avoiding leaving for a schismatic group because they list it as a sin.

I was thinking a while ago that I would like to find a list of venial sins to look through for confession, so thank you for posting the link, though some of the things listed are questionable.

Do you mean that this list is not an accurate representation of sins that need to be confessed? I thought it was quite accurate. 🤷
Let me make this easier for you…,

all the sins on this list or any list are simply the variations of the root cause. Lust & Pride. Even every capital sin is rooted in lust & pride.

The fall of Lucifer and his fallen angels came from these two sins. If your list is long, then just go with the 7 deadly ones…or even narrow them down to 2…lust and pride.

Go to Confession at least once a month my friend…we need it.

Amen…

Lists and “examinations of conscience” are merely tools designed to prompt our recollection of when we acted contrary to Love. Pride and Lust are, as you say, the two root causes, the primary avenues by which we act contrary to Love.

I would even expand from lust and pride,

Someone sins because they:
  • Do not love God,
  • Do not love their neighbor,
  • Do not have faith in God or,
  • Pride
Both sin in themselves and realities leading to sin, with few to no exceptions we all do those things. Truely, even if we have not committed mortal sin, it is better for us to go to confession as often as possible.

Very good post and very true.

I don’t wish this to be taken as disagreeing with what you say here, but the reason that “Pride and Lust” are seen as the common underpinnings is that, even in the matter of Love - or lack there of - Pride and Lust are the “common denominator”
- Do not love God,
The result of a prideful love of self over all others, including God.
- Do not love their neighbor,
Likewise - a Pride of self over others - coupled with a lust for things at the [e]expense of others.
- Do not have faith in God
This ones is a bit more iffy. there are a number of different aspects to lack of faith.

None of what’s listed there seems particularly difficult to me. Don’t be a dick; will what is best for others; give everyone their due; don’t kill people; etc. His burden is indeed easy: just be what He made you to be.

Simply “having a thought” is not a sin. Sin is an act of the will.

As for “something that is natural to human nature,” I suspect you have either a deformed understanding of sin (which, by definition, is willful action contrary to human nature) or a deformed understanding of human nature. How, in either case, is this the problem of Christ or the Church?
Who exactly decided on the extrapolation? I find many sins to be really reaching, taking the extrapolation to a ridiculous degree.
The Church, which alone exercises the charism of infallibility in its exercise of the magisterium.
Masturbation is a completely natural human urge/function. Toddlers discover it, for goodnes sake. We are built to be sexual beings. How does being a normal human with an urge that is built into us constitute not loving God?
Not surprising; nearly everyone who objects to the Church’s ethical teachings does so either over contraception or masturbation.

So you’re (presumably) a masturbator and you want to masturbate with the approval of your conscience. Well, sorry, friend, but you’re going to have to find it elsewhere. And no amount of snark will induce us to give it to you.

You should do your homework on the topic before presuming to scold us on the topic, on the basis of what you openly acknowledge is your ignorance of the relevant teachings. Edward Feser’s *Aquinas *is a good place to start.
I can no longer wrap my brain around this religion.
That bespeaks a deficiency with respect to your brain.

Read Edward Feser’s *Aquinas *if you’re interested in learning more about natural law ethics.

A quick view of it and it seems like a decent list to help with an examination of conscience. Tell me, which ones on that list do you think should not be a sin, ie it does not seem to harm anyone or offend God.

A better translation is “My yoke is sweet, my burden is light”. As to the latter, I do not see how the length of the list makes a burden heavy. As to the former, following the moral teachings of the Church certainly, beyond a doubt, will help lead to a *sweet *life. Sin corrupts, it sours.

Looked at it again, and parts of the list are at the best ambiguous. Certainly there are lists similiar to that which do serve as a good guide to an examination of conscience. Not hard to find. I do not mean to give any endorsement for that particular list.

You only have to worry about 2 commandments that Jesus gave us…

Love God with all your heart and all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.

As for the list, it is a good way to jog the memory.
St. Augustin: “Love and do whatever you want!”
By Love, St. Augustin did not understand “make love”, “feel like”, “relations” and the other jargon.
Love is to desire the other’s good. Love is will…
