Hi! I know that watching certain TV shows are a sin. But, I was wondering which ones were OK to watch and which ones were sinful. Would you consider watching old episodes of “Roseanne” a sin? Or 90210? I am having trouble to abstain from watching some TV shows. When I am bored, I like to use the computer and chat with friends, or go shopping, reading, … can any of you give me some good and moral things to do when I am bored. I feel like everything is a sin, and I do not know what to do anymore. Please let me know, thanks 🙂 God Bless
 
Do you watch these shows with the deliberation of seperating from God? Do you do it in a fashion that takes away from giving glory to God? I doubt it. I hope you do not intend these things. We can enjoy fiction and humor, but not at the expense of our relationship with Christ. It may not be a sin inherently, but could be near occasion of sin. If you watch a lot of movies or TV with violence or sex or swearing, it could desensitize you to the evils of the world.

This might seem too pious: but what is the purpose of life? (I was born and raised Catholic, and a Protestant actually pointed this out to me!)

The FIRST POINT in the Catechism begins with this sentence:

God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life.

Share in the life God gave you! Enjoy friendship and fellowship with other Christians and Catholics. Read, learn, take up interesting hobbies about things you are passionate about. Do you like music? Do you play an instrument or want to learn? Do you play sports or exercise? Are you involved at church? These questions aren’t for me to hear answers…they are for you to answer for yourself. Everything we do should be done for the glory of God. Ask yourself: “is that what I do?”

Not everything is a sin, we live in a mortal world, we are going to be exposed to sin daily, by others . Its only when we carry out sin ourselves that we are blameworthy No man can sit around with a halo & twiddle his thumbs in this world. Watching reruns of Roseanne is hardly sinful. The truth is if we examine everything for sin content , we would do nothing just probably go bury ourselves under a rock. Live , enjoy relax enjoy a joke, God gave us this ability, Dont be so hard on yourself

If you have cable or satellite, you will find EWTN. Its a catholic channel. I never knew that watching these shows are sins. its not like you are watching porn. Especially old comedy shows.:rolleyes:

EWTN is “The Eternal Word Television Network” that Mother Angelica started in the 80’s. It is all Catholic 24 hrs. a day. You can watch it “live” on the internet or on television (cable or satellite). Just get on EWTN’s web site and click on “live video.” You’ll love their programs.

HNA444, it seems you are having some trouble discerning what is sinful and what is not. Clearly it is very important to you. That is a good thing. But it is not a good thing to torture youself unnecessarily. You really need to seek the counsel of a priest, deacon, or spiritual director to help you work this out. Being a good Catholic is not about some simple list of rules. God does not intend keeping His commandments to be such a heavy burden. though it is sometimes a fight to avoid temptation, and we all occasionally fail, living in God’s grace is supposed be a joy–true freedom. He loves you and wants what is best for you. Jesus said that He came so that we might have life and have it abundantly! God’s laws are for our good, not to produce misery.

Yes, there are things we can read, watch on tv, etc. that can be sinful. But just because something is enjoyable or secular in nature does not make it inherently sinful. I hope and pray you find good counsel and peace with these issues.

Thanks Debra… I understand more now that I have been going to bible study and learning from others such as yourself. It’s just sometimes I feel like if i do something i know is a sin, even a small sin, I think about it and feel bad for doing it even though i want to, if that makes any sense. But, I know that is not just a list of rules, i just find it hard avoiding against things that are a sin sometimes, thats all

Ask yourself the question: Would Jesus, Mary and Joseph watch Rosanne or 90210? There’s the anwer to your original question. Only watch what Jesus, Mary and Joseph would watch - don’t watch anything that compromises.🙂

I know, I do ask myself that question about a lot of things. And, that’s the hard part, because if I kept asking myself that , I think the only thing I can do is pray all day lol. I don’t think Jesus, Mary and Joseph would do anything that we do here on earth.

You sound like a good soul that wants to become a saint, like I do. I no longer watch television, HNA444, just EWTN and I spend my free time in prayer, watching EWTN or reading spiritual books. Sometimes I go outside for some fresh air and read or pray while I’m with nature. Praying a lot, watching EWTN, doing spiritual reading, and doing the work you have to do makes a pretty good day, if you ask me.🙂

I used to watch a couple of comedies on television that for the most part had really funny humor. But sometimes some of the jokes were bad and I couldn’t overlook them, so I had to stop watching the programs. It was either my spiritual life or the television programs. I chose my spiritual life because that will get me in heaven - not the television entertainment. I’m not saying that you have to cut out all television. I did, however, and have never been happier about what I watch (EWTN on the internet).

That’s really admirable, and I wish I can become like that also… but it’s really hard. I am getting a lot better though at avoiding temptation, which is good but I still cannot find myself to read spiritual books all day or pray all day. One of my cousins and my uncle are the same way as you, and I always go to them for guidance on what to do, but it’s just so hard for me to be like that … but i want to.!!

Excellent! With your desire you are already half-way there! I’d just cut out any television program that bothers your conscience. If you feel guilt over watching those two programs you are listening either to a delicate conscience ( a good, well formed conscience) or a scrupulous one. I’ve seen Rosanne a long time ago and had a problem with it. I know I wasn’t being scrupulous either. I don’t know about the other program. I used to watch the old Beverly Hills 90210 when I was younger, but I can’t remember anything really about it.

You might want to consider being a Prayer Warrior for the Catholic Answers Forums. You can devote some time to praying for those who post on the Prayer Intention Forum.🙂

This is the way to do it I completely agree. Throw out the television. 🙂 If you want to become a pure soul, it is the only way to do it. Otherwise endless garbage will just keep spilling in, unfiltered into your mind and soul, the kind of stuff you can’t take with you to Heaven and that keeps you from it.

Immodest dress, blaspheming the name of God, simply an entirely anti-Christian worldview show after show… Just say no to it. 🙂

Replace the television habit with spiritual and virtuous habits, and your life will improve magnificently and your relationship with God. 🙂 It’s tough to give up worldly things but it is the Gospel message.
