Please could somebody help me with this sin.

IVF/ICSI.

One thing is I am no good with biology, please try not to bog me down with complicated stuff.

I feel I shouldn’t have done this but to what level?

From the Catechism:

2376 Techniques that entail the dissociation of husband and wife, by the intrusion of a person other than the couple (donation of sperm or ovum, surrogate uterus), are gravely immoral. These techniques (heterologous artificial insemination and fertilization) infringe the child’s right to be born of a father and mother known to him and bound to each other by marriage. They betray the spouses’ “right to become a father and a mother only through each other.”

2377 Techniques involving only the married couple (homologous artificial insemination and fertilization) are perhaps less reprehensible, yet remain morally unacceptable. They dissociate the sexual act from the procreative act. The act which brings the child into existence is no longer an act by which two persons give themselves to one another, but one that “entrusts the life and identity of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. Such a relationship of domination is in itself contrary to the dignity and equality that must be common to parents and children.” “Under the moral aspect procreation is deprived of its proper perfection when it is not willed as the fruit of the conjugal act, that is to say, of the specific act of the spouses’ union . . . . Only respect for the link between the meanings of the conjugal act and respect for the unity of the human being make possible procreation in conformity with the dignity of the person.”

2378 A child is not something owed to one, but is a gift. The “supreme gift of marriage” is a human person. A child may not be considered a piece of property, an idea to which an alleged “right to a child” would lead. In this area, only the child possesses genuine rights: the right “to be the fruit of the specific act of the conjugal love of his parents,” and “the right to be respected as a person from the moment of his conception.”

2379 The Gospel shows that physical sterility is not an absolute evil. Spouses who still suffer from infertility after exhausting legitimate medical procedures should unite themselves with the Lord’s Cross, the source of all spiritual fecundity. They can give expression to their generosity by adopting abandoned children or performing demanding services for others.
 
If a couple have a child through this way, are they continually commiting a mortal sin as long as the child is alive?

I have descended into a bad sin but if it appears that my wife is pregnant, the sin will never go away?

Am I able to redeem myself?

Your question can parallel itself with a man who had a vasectomy. Is he continuing to sin each time he has relations with his wife? The Church is clear that if he confesses this sin, even though the consequences are permanent, it is absolved. We are not perfect people. Women have had abortions which render a permanent fate for these unborn. This is the same for those who utilize IVF. But God will forgive anyone who seeks forgiveness with a contrite heart.
AND the good news is that God makes things good outside of our bad choices. In this case He created a child for you. Your child is no less a gift and no less valuable to God than any person in this world.

Take this to the confessional and then enjoy your life with a God who is so merciful that He granted you an infinitley precious gift in spite of your actions. God bless you and your family… teachccd
 
And one more point… You** asked **whether or not your actions were a mortal sin. This alone signifies that it might not be. Your actions were of grave matter but that must be coupled with your knowledge of such and your complete consent to go ahead with this all while knowing how grave this action is. If you are not aware of the gravity of this action then you may not be in mortal sin. I would definitely take this to confession as one should never guess when it regards your eternal life… teachccd

The Child is innocent.
The sin will go away with reconcilliation.
Yes…

Talk to your Priest.
 
It is Jesus Christ who has redeemed you and who can forgive your sin in confession (just as he can murder, adultery, invalid marriages that then reconcile with the Church, vascetimies, lust, all sorts of things…his mercy and love can wash it all away…he loves you and if you repent of this or any other mortal sin and turn away from the sin by his grace…he will forgive you in confession! and begin right away…with an act of contrition out of love of him above all)

And very importantly

Thanks be to God you are recognizing this and can be reconciled with God and the Church!

Now that a child exists…love him or her 🙂 For she exists now and is your child and thru Baptism will be or is a child of God! 🙂 🙂

and go and sin no more 🙂 knowing the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit…knowing the love of God for you and your child.
