Sir 22:3 RSV It is a disgrace to be the father of an undisciplined son, and the birth of a daughter is a loss.

Can someone please explain this verse to me? How is the birth of a daughter a loss?🤷

The NAB translates v. 3-4:
An unruly child is a disgrace to its father; if it be a daughter she brings him to poverty. A thoughtful daughter becomes a treasure to her husband, a shameless one is her father’s grief.

The Douay-Rheims v. 3-4 reads:
A son ill taught is the confusion of the father: and a foolish daughter shall be to his loss. 4 A wise daughter shall bring an inheritance to her husband: but she that confoundeth, becometh a disgrace to her father

So I think what it is saying is that an unruly child is “costly” to a parent. Not that the child’s birth is a “loss”. Only is there misbehavior disgraceful. :o

Hi, Holly!

…we must place ourselves in the situation… today girls go out into the street dressed as prostitutes and society think they are just excerting their right to be rebellious or use their sexuality to their advantage… they yell, scream, curse, smoke, drink, do drugs and fight just like “one of the guys.” Society is forever claiming that behavior as an excellent gain for woman’s lib…

The Bible has a very distinct view of children who behave in such fashion. The boys are a disgrace (they carry the blessing of the first born, etc.), and the girls are much worse because they are seen as the nurturing counterpart to the male. A female behaving in such way brings dishonor to the family as all will speak ill of her actions–this makes them the cause of heartache and headache as the prospective husbands will have a built-in reason to reject them shortly after the marriage is consumated (honor and financial loss).

Maran atha!
