In comparing two different translations, I notice a significant difference in a reading from Sirach 24.

In the douay rheims * Sirach 24: 23-31 does not match that of the New American Bible, and has several verses that are omitted in the NAB.
Also, the NAB version seems to start at Sirach 24:17, not 23.

Why is this?*
 
My New Jerusalem Bible gives two sets of verse numberings for Chapter 24, and in several other chapters of Sirach. Verses 17-22 in one version is 23-30 in the other, while 23-31 in the first version is 32-42 in the other.

Note that chapters and verses are not part of the original scriptures, but were added many centuries later. They were added about the time of the first printing of the Scriptures. I have heard that it was to facilitate type setting, but am not sure of that.
