Is there any truth to the Rumours that Siri was elected Pope in 1958 and 1962 but had to pull back because of his anti Soviet views. If this is true I imagine we would be in a much diffrent Church today!

If this is true, this really says something about Cardinal Siri. Think about the 1958 conclave, and how popular a Pope John XXIII was. If Cardinal Siri got more votes than John XXIII, who in my opinion was virtually impossible not to love, then he must have been regarded by his peers on a level which is difficult even to imagine.

Frankly, however, I don’t see this true, as anti-soviet views aren’t really a reason for him to have denied the Throne of Peter. Many Popes, including Pius XII and John Paul II, actively worked toward undermining and ending the Reign of the Soviet government, and the case of this last one, it worked.

I think that once elected all the candidate has to do is accept and he is pope as of that moment. Any pulling back would be his choice, not one that could be dictated to him.

Sure!

The children of the Jews and Masons who convinced Franz Joseph to veto the election of Cardinal Rampolla conspired to keep Cardinal Siri from being elected.

Isn’t this one of the reasons certain sede’s use to say there is not a valid Pope? :hypno:

Yes, the Dimond Brothers support this idea, I believe. According to the story, Cardinal Siri was elected but resigned immediately under pressure. Since he was pressured, the proponents say, the resignation was invalid. Thus Cardnial Siri was the real pope. But no sufficient evidence exists to support this idea. It’s just a conspiracy theory.

This reminds me of the situation that led to the Great Western Schism, except in that case a large group of cardinals tried to promote the idea that the election of Urban VI was invalid due to pressure during the election. However, not enough evidence existed to support their theory, either, so the Church holds that Urban VI was the true pope and the second person they elected, Clement VII, was an antipope.

At least in the case of the Western Schism, a bunch of cardinals and antipope Clement VII all supported his false claims. In Cardinal Siri’s case, not even Cardinal Siri himself claimed that he was pope. He certainly appeared to acknowledge John XXIII, Paul VI, etc… as true popes.
