I was randomly youtubing “Salve Regina” and came across a scene in the movie where the nuns sing this. The last time I saw this movie, I knew nothing about Catholicism but loved the movie anyway.

How do you folks feel about the movie? Good? Bad? Too cheeky? Irreverent? Does it give the impression that the Church condones lying about one’s true identity? (j/k about that last part)

I watched it twice, watching it everyone would know it was meant to be funny, which it was.
Real nuns don’t act like this, nor carry on like this, its so far fetched you would know.

Its not lying, its just funny.

When I saw it I felt it was a bit of a throw back to many of the nun movies of the fourties, fivties and sixties (like the ones with Berry Fitzgareld and Bing Corsby).

I thought it was a great movie; and given that it was a movie it is simply for entertainment purposes. I personally thought the movie showed nuns in a good light wanting to be helpful to those around them and involved in the World.

I don’t know if the Catholic Church ever officially rated or put out a statement on the movie.

Mary.

It’s ok if your easily impressed, it’s jovial, it’s trying to poke fun at the Nuns & the Catholic Church, which in the physical world is fine, but in the Spiritual world, it’s not really very Spiritual !

Loved this movie when it came out! Saw it recently on TV and still loved it. The actors were all good. The assumption of this movie was that the Christian work the nuns were doing was worthwhile and worthy of admiration. You cannot necessarily assume that someone making this movie today would share so positive a view.

If anyone has a few minutes and wants to hear an energetic version of “Hail Holy Queen” from the movie…(Warning: Mother Superior does not approve.)

Hail Holy Queen

Hail Holy Queen
I’m with “Mother.” Hail Holy Queen is a prayer. Should be sung with lots of reverence. But if they spruced up a true song, that would be a little different.

Overall, I did like the movie but I’m sure that if this had happened in real life, Mother Angelic would have been all over them for rocking out Hail Holy Queen.

God Bless.

Hmm…I thought this rendition was a joyful song of praise to the Blessed Mother.

I apologize for posting something irreverent…

Its a great feelgood movie, soooo 90’s, love it!

I must have watched it over 50 times when I was a kid. 😛

I don’t think reverent -= somber. There is a whole lot of joyful praising in the Bible and inthe Psalms if that is good enough for the Father the Almighty Creator I think Mary can enjoy it too

I enjoyed the movie. It is a comedy that does laugh at the nuns. It isn’t mean spirited. It isn’t vey realistic. They did make a joyful noise onto the Lord

Hated it that much, eh? lol
I Don’t hate, hatred it’s from the dark side, I don’t see too many Evangelical movies, Baptists, Mormon, born again movies, Jehovah witnesses movies ? why ? Most movies unless i’m biased have been based on the Catholic Faith !

I invite you to post me up a Box office non-catholic movie…

LOVE Sister Act!! And I also love Sister Act 2!

It isn’t “poking fun” at the Catholic Church in an offensive way. It’s just fun. Great fun. Clean fun. I’m all for it. 🙂

So are there any non offensive Evangelical, Baptist, Mormon, Muslim movies that you could draw my attention too ?

Not the Church er se, but the USCCB reviewed it at the time
Sister Act – Having witnessed a mob rubout, a Reno lounge singer (Whoopi Goldberg) hides out in a cloistered San Francisco convent disguised as a nun and horrifies Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) by turning their choir into a local sensation and getting the nuns involved in their neighborhood. Director Emile Ardolino parlays Goldberg’s sassiness into a lively comedy that treats nuns both as comic figures and spirited, caring individuals with a positive lifestyle. References to an extramarital affair and brief comic violence. (A-III) (PG) ( 1992 )

I liked it when it came out. I haven’t seen it since then but I remember it as being light-hearted and funny. I think the premise being so far-fetched is what made it funny.

🤷 I don’t know, but I don’t particularly see your point. You didn’t like the movie and that’s fine. I did, and that’s also fine. Even the USCCB didn’t find it morally offensive. I tend to trust my bishops on most other things. Besides, I can’t think of what in that film “poked fun” at Catholic teaching, doctrine or dogma.

Plus, Maggie Smith can’t do much wrong in my book.

Man, now I want to go watch it.

I didn’t like how the movie portrays the traditional in an unflattering way. The movie promotes modernism.
