Obviously, some folks prefer spending their time in conflict with their Church.

You can cut-and-paste documents til you’re blue in the face and still wake up tomorrow angry and frustrated with the Church…scurrying about looking for grit to sweep…while others of us will continue on with faith, joy, and obedience…with our heads up, in case we come upon a rock.

Hoewver, it was precisely why documents like Redemptionis Sacramentum came into being. Misued authority can certainly lead to abuse. Rampant misinterpretations can also lead to abuse. That is why Rome pretty much has to spell things out for bishops and priests. That is also why Rome has a mechanism set in place to report abuses (in cases like the OP).

My father wrote to the Holy See after sending our bishop a letter (certified, return receipt requested). The letter was never acknowledged by the local Ordinary. However, within three weeks of sending his letter to Rome, my father received both the orange international card and a letter from the Congregation acknowledging receipt of the letter and informing him that an investigation would be ensuing. Now, if the local Ordinary can’t even send an acknowledgment from across town, how is that the Prefect can send an acknowldegment across the ocean?
My daughter wrote a certified, return receipt to Chrysler back in the 80’s…after the local dealer refused to acknowledge her original letter…Yes, Chrysler signed and returned her card…and sent her a letter acknowledging her concern…and guess what happened after that? Nothing.

Just because they sign for your letter doesn’t mean Rome is gonna be out to your parish this week to correct your complaint. It just means that they have someone to sign for the letters that come in.

True, but at least they can’t deny that you got in touch with 'em though.

Mind you - once I sent a certified letter to someone (actually a neighbour, they were being so difficult I didn’t want the extreme hassle of face-to-face contact) and they actually refused to sign for the letter!

Have you ever read Redemptionis Sacramentum?

Yep, many times
What does that have to do with anything?

Grit and Rocks, my friend

. Not around here. You seem to be painting with a broad brush.

I find it hard to believe that you’ve never attended Mass somewhere that there wasn’t a “talk” given during the “homily” period that wasn’t by the presiding priest or deacon.

Which is why they release documents like Redemptionis Sacramentum. How else would rome respond? Do you have some sort of movie theater version of Jesuit Ninjas enforcing the GIRM? The church deals with issues like Redemptionis Sacramentum. The Very fact that the document was written is proof that Rome forbids itThey don’t allow it! Hence the document R.S. Sorry no jesuit Ninjas.

Never heard of Jesuit Ninjas, you must belong to one peculiar church!.

WHich is why they have a Cardinal Arinze produce Documents like R.S…DUH!!! …DOUBLE DUH!!!

Ah, and what would a tradtionalist thread be without at least one reference to Cardinal Arinze?

I am positive the Church fully well knows John 8:7----yet She has indeed bound everyone to do all that is in there power to stop abuses. Are you now placing yourself above the Church. Are you now the “church of ethelzguy”.
:rotfl: The forum again is doing some behind-the-scenes good. The more that “guy” is on the net, the less “ethel” has to listen to his silliness.

Come on, ethelzguy… either you want to attend a Mass celebrated in the worship of God, or you will just settle for whatever the celebrant gives you… without complaint=concern.

Yep, many times (Ethelzguy stating he has read R.S.)
WHy do you suppose it was written?

Never have- take it or leave it. I have attended Novus Ordo Churches that had a “talk” after the final blessing though … your disbelief makes me realize that the progressive inroads are so deep in some places that people don’t realize that orthodoxy and traditionalism is alive, well and GROWING. It makes me realize how widespread dissent went. Certainly explains the absence of 30 somthings in those areas.

Ah, and what would a tradtionalist thread be without at least one reference to Cardinal Arinze?

A HUGE blessing to the church isn’t He!?

It’s not an “either\or” thing, and I don’t think the Pope would have any problems rejoicing in the good news, but mentioning that they would have a better church for the school kids to attend if they followed the liturgical rules.
👍 And unless the nun has all the money necessary and all the details addressed, the proper course of action would be open organized meetings for the parishioners to Q&A this homiletic announcement.

If a nun were to give a talk here she would have to use a blowtorch on the bars that separate them from the Congregation.

I suppose someone could pass a mic to them…but then again these are not the type of Gals who go against CHurch teaching on matters.

Oh, so you wanna get personal, eh? 🤷

Come on, ethelzguy… either you want to attend a Mass celebrated in the worship of God, or you will just settle for whatever the celebrant gives you… without complaint=concern.

Oh yes, and I’m all too certain that God will give you extra brownie points for your careful observation as to whether the priest elevates the host to your interpretation of “proper” at each Mass. Me, I’m just grateful to be able to RECEIVE the Blessed Sacrement. I’m not out with my surveyor’s transit to make sure he elevated “properly” at the consecration
The “silliness” I see, is the attitudes and antics of those who THINK they are experts on the Catholic Church constantly moanin’ and groanin’ against the clergy and hierarchy who have been educated and trained by the Church herself…AND possess the authority that the whiners THINK they have.

I find it equally silly that there are so many who freely spend their time critiquing the HMC, yet declined the opportunity to SERVE the Church through Holy Orders. I am certain that some of you could have done SO much a better job

Gee, I’ll have to check with one of my daughters, who just happens to live in Brighton, to find out just how “perfect” your priest and Mass really is? 👍

Is she Catholic? Will she know? Will she join CAF and tell us?

I have seen no one act in a way that implied any authority that was not given to them by the Pope himself. Namely to report any of the abuses that he outlined in Redemptionis Sacramentum.

Is it your opinion that the Pope asked the faithful to do something that they are incapable of doing; in recognizing the abuses that he outlined, or reporting on them?

No one is critiquing the Church. The only critique I have seen has been directed against those who disobey what HMC has to say on the subjects at hand.

She’s VERY Catholic. Lives in some gated community there. Moved there from Grosse Pointe a couple of years ago.

First of all, you have misread a good deal of the posts here. No one is in conflict with the Church. In fact, I love the Church and am one of her daughters (wayward, sometimes, but, still, her daughter).

What you apparently fail to see is that the consternation, anger and frustration is not aimed at the Church; rather, it is directed at those who, ignoring thier roles as stewards of the Church’s liturgical life, would rather “do their own thing”. These very individuals, clergy (meaning some priests and bishops) and the laity (whether consecrated relgious or not), set aside the rubrics and norms of the Church in favor of their own personal idiosyncracies. Often, this is done by those folks in authoritiy.

Had the problem not been so grave, Rome would not have had to issue a document like Redemptionis Sacramentum, nor would she have had to clarify the GIRM by promulgating a third, typical edition in 2000.

Incidentally, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was not the only curial department handing Redemptionis Sacramentum. It worked in tandem with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which , at the time, was headed by none other than the former Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (who has since gone on to become Pope Benedict XVI).

Therefore, this document is very authoritative and is not an “optional”-use document. It carries the force of law ans should be obeyed by bishop and layman alike.

The document further reiterates that no one has the right to do with the Mass as they please, meaning that they can’t fiddle around with the homily and substitute it for an ecclesial infomercial. The problem is that we have become no nonchalant about abuse that nothing phases us anymore and we take on the attitude expressed by a couple of folks posting on this thread.

I think a number of us “moaners and groaners” are concerned that Holy Mother Church (through her members, of course, not of Her own accord) did not educate and train Her seminarians thoroughly during the past few decades. Perhaps that is one cause of the rampant personalization of the liturgy (by which I mean bishops and priests modifying the liturgy as their whims direct them), and why our deacons, priests, and bishops are unable to read the most basic Latin prayers (let ALONE celebrate the Latin Rite in Latin).
