"One of three senior nuns about to be replaced as campus ministers at three Long Island colleges by rookie priests promised to fight the firing “every inch of the way.”

Sister Kathy Riordan, the only female chaplain at Hofstra University, said an official of the Diocese of Rockville Centre told her this month to step down gracefully after 10 years on the job. “They want young blood,” said Riordan, who will be sacked this fall in favor of priests fresh from the seminary…"

"Riordan said she always kept an open mind when she counseled students of all religions and many nonbelievers on tough issues such as abortion, gay rights and premarital sex.

The nun fears her replacements will be less available to students ** and that the young clerics’ more conservative views could turn troubled students away."…**

Interesting…

Yet another example of the change Pope John Paul is bringing. Little by little, the flakiness is being swept away and sanity is creeping back in.

The graying baby boomers who have done so much to harm the Church are slowly on the way out–Good riddance

That’s the second good article I have seen on the Diocese of Rockville. Are they having a turn around. Their reputation for orthodoxy was poor in the past.

She is afraid that orthodoxy will attract students. That will make her look bad and call into question all that she has done to subvert the faith. I pity all the young people who were led astray by her.

God forbid they would actually be shown the error of their ways. That obviously isn’t the message Sister wants them to hear. It’s very sad to see this generation of dedicated religious fail to see the damage caused by the ‘loosy goosy open minded’ attitude toward the Truth. I think they truly thought telling people that sinful behavior was OK was being pastoral.

Well the resister sister has obviously been scurrying through the hallowed halls of the University scaring them about her replacement - what business is it of the University’s anyway?

And what ever happened to the sister’s vow of obedience?

The stir her potential displacement has caused is further evidence of her strong commitment and impact on the campus. The Newman Club, the Deans of Students Office and President Rabinowitz have all expressed opposition to the diocese’s decision.

It appears that the diocese is making decisions that are based independently on their values, without regard to the interests of the University’s Catholic community.

The students that stand to lose from Riordan’s forced leave from the campus should speak out and try to connect with their religious institution.

The diocese’s action so far is a sad indication of a religious community losing touch with its members. Ultimately it’s the future students who will suffer most, they will not have the benefit of entering a Chaplain’s office that emits the warmth and spirit of a cohesive religious group - Sister Kathy’s relationship with students makes that happen. Replacing Sister Kathy with a younger and less experienced Chaplain seems to be exactly what the University’s Catholic community doesn’t want. What they do want is a spiritual leader who has both religious and social wisdom.
