I work in a health care facility. Yesterday a group of Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence came to lead a Bingo party with our residents. They were actually men dressed in women’s clothing wearing veils. Very nice and polite, yet looked clownish and quite freakish. They talked as if events such as this were their ministry. I had the feeling they were mocking (satirizing…?) the Sisters of our Catholic Church. Is anyone here familiar with this group…?

I’ve heard of them; they’ve been around since the late 1900s.

It is, in a sense, “satirical” of the Catholic Church and its female vocations (although that term normally refers to the written word).

I’m not personally familiar with them, but I have seem them in the news before. Not very respectful to our religious sisters.

I always thought she were in the vein of Mrs Brown’s Boys

I live in San Francisco, where they were founded in 1979, and know them well. They are indeed men, who dress in drag, wearing habits and veils, and white face. Perhaps back in the 70’s and 80’s, they mocked the church, but these days, they are quite respectable. Their mission is charity and care for those who are on the fringe. They actually raise a lot of money that goes to good use.

Although San Francisco is the ‘Mother House’, as it were, they are an international body.

Some people might find them disconcerting, but I would give them a thumbs up for all the good work they do.

It is possible to do good work without ridiculing others. That would be doing a good work, and a not-so-good work together!

Agreed. And I think that here in San Francisco, the ridiculing has long past. They are fun and passionate about the work that they do, and most see them as such. On the other hand, my guess is that they are not invited to tea very often with the Archbishop. That’s ok too. Neither am I.

Their 501c3 block has the caption “go forth and sin some more”.

I think pretty significant prayers are needed.

Right. Although I can appreciate that they apparently spend more time recently in doing actual charitable work than in stirring up trouble, the very name of their group, their tagline, and their manner of dress is offensive to Catholics. Even if they don’t draw attention to it otherwise and even if they behave in a super nice way, it is still offensive. The only way for it not to be offensive is for them to change their name, slogan, and outfits.

You know that Catholics are not the only ones who have Sisters. In the Bay Area, there are (habited) Anglican Sisters, Buddhist Sisters, Orthodox Sisters, Bhikkhuni Sisters, and Brahma Kumari Sisters. Perhaps they might be considered in this conversation.
