The day before Christmas eve, my guy friend and I decided to go to a comedy show and his older cousin came along because we went once with him and he lives in the area. This time, I said that I would bring my girl friend. My guy friend admitted to me his cousin had a DUI, because I figured it out once he said he couldn’t drive and his license is suspended. He said he also used to do drugs, but now he actually is really healthy and is a vegan. His cousin is also older and kind of desperate to find a girl. When I mentioned that I was bringing my girl friend he took it as he was going to try dating her (he didn’t even meet her yet), and I said that it’s not a date, and he said that it’s a double date. My girl friend also wants a boyfriend really bad, but she’s a lot younger than him (she’s 24 and he is 38!)… I told him that she doesn’t like guys that much older (she had told me that before). But, I guess he didn’t care. We go to the comedy show, and it was noticeable that he liked her and she liked him. He didn’t ask for her phone number, but I made plans with everyone to go out again. We did, and his cousin helped him ask for her # , so he did. But, he never told her his age or about his DUI, or drugs yet. And, I did not want to say anything because I felt like that’s not my place.

My girl friend and I hung out yesterday evening, and she said she had a date with him on Saturday… and that me and my friend could show up also. We started talking, and I said “do you know how old he is”? and she said, “no, how old is he”? I told her 38. And she was shocked. She said she thought early 30s. (in my opinion, I think she needed to ask him because when we hung out my guy friend said he was “25” and he said it not very serious, and I said “he’s not 25” but i did not say his real age). Well, she didn’t like that he was so much older, mainly because her mom and dad would not like that. Than, she said something about his license being suspended, and i said “he told you about his DUI?” And, she said no but that she kind of figured it out. I remember when my guy friend first told me about the DUI, he said he had more than 1 but i was not positive, so I was telling her that there is no way he is getting his license back that soon and that i will find out if she wants. I told her that my friend told me he used to do drugs also. He told her that he was getting his license back this year (which is a lie). She was not liking this, but I guess she wanted to know if he had more than 1 DUI. Because, than she would not talk to him at all.

My guy friend called me while we were just about to leave. So, I called him once I got home. He had me on 3 way with his cousin, discussing where we would hang out on Saturday night. When his cousin was not on the phone with us anymore, I asked my friend about his license trying to see if he was going to mention his 3 DUI’s, because I had remembered he told me something to that extent before. Well, he did… he said he had 3 DUI’s , but that was 3 or 5 years ago (which to me, is not that long ago). I told my guy friend that I don’t think my friend likes that. And, he kind of got upset with me that I told her his age and his DUI. I didn’t even tell him that I told her about the drugs because than I know he’d get really mad. But, I honestly didn’t think I was doing anything wrong, because him or his cousin never told not to say anything to her. I told him that, and I said if you don’t want me to say anything than just tell me that. And he told me not to say anything more. I said OK. She ends up calling me, and we start talking and I tell her that I don’t want to say anything else or get involved (she got a feeling that I said that because I found out something bad). So, she says “tell me”. And, I tell her that I don’t want to say anything. Than she tries tricking me and says "i want to ask you a question, and you can say either “yes”, “no” or “i dont want to say” … so she says was it more than a DUI that he had? I asked, “what do you mean by more than DUI?” She said like more than 1 DUI? Of course, I said “i dont want to say” and she took it was a “yes” because she said she can tell from the tone of my voice. Now, I feel TERRIBLE and that I let out more information that I should have. She told me that she told her parents everything, and she’s telling me that we shouldn’t hang out with them, but that’s not her decison to make for me. I wish I never said anything from the beginning, and she was acting like I should be telling her because we are girl friends. This girl is veryyy shy and insecure (in my opinion), and so she doesn’t want to ask him questions but instead has me going and finding out, which I just realized now. It’s not fair for me, and now I feel like I did something wrong. And, also if I hang out with my guy friend and his cousin she probably will think I am not being a good friend to her. Any advice???

My opinion:
  1. You did nothing wrong by telling your friend that he had 3 previous DUIs if that is true. Same with this drug history. I wouldn’t hesistate to give my friend every piece of information I KNEW to be true. I would not have played games like you can ask me a question and I will hint at the correct answer. Childish. I would have just flat out told her because she has a right to know who she is getting involved with.
  2. She has a right to know his actual age. I think he’s too old for her so good for her for recognizing that.
If I were asked by either my guy friend or his cousin, I would admit to telling my friend his history because i care about my friend and SHE HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW - especially if I were the one who introduced them. Hopefully it won’t come to that though… your friend needs to simply be honest if the cousin asks her out… “No - I don’t want to go out with you because of our age difference.” That’s it - the DUIs and drugs don’t even have to be mentioned becasue even if he is totally rehabilitated, he’s still too old.

Regarding the friend getting mad about you hanging out with your guy friend and his cousin… that’s just dumb. I can’t believe she’d care who you hung out with? Are you supposed to be with her 24/7? That sort of jealous/possessive relationship nonsense is for 14 year olds - not 24 year olds. If that happens, I suggest you find a new friend.

Thanks!.. I know the story sounds sort of confusing, but it was actually her who tricked me by asking the question so that I could tell her (even though she knew I did not want to say anything). I think you are right, but also I feel like this is his (the cousin) own personal business and he has a right to tell her on his own without me saying something. I mean, they literally just started talking, but if they were to be dating for couple months and it kept going, I would have told her, but I feel like I shouldn’t had said anything. That’s kind of why people talk and get to know eachother first before they date,… that’s her place to ask him questions about his past (but she’s way tooooooo shy to do that).

I think big stuff like 3 DUIs, previous drug use and age are things that she should know before they date even one time. If you were to have waited a few months, she may have already been really into the guy and that might have clouded her otherwise good judgement.

If you were her, wouldn’t you have wanted to know up front?

If the cousin doesn’t like people talking about his past, he should have thought of that before getting 3 DUIs.

What a loser. Sorry - but that’s the truth. 🤷

Advice: You are no longer 13 years old. Stop acting like you are.

And go to confession and talk to the priest about the sin of detraction-- telling things about people that other do not have a right to know. Gossping and detraction are serious sins.

Stop it.

She did not “trick” you. You willingly went along with her silliness.

You are not 13 years old, and you know better. That is why you felt the need to come here and tell this big long story to everyone.

What did I go along with?? I just said tha I told her I did not want to say anything, so what did I go along with? I just wanted some advice, … I don’t think I sinned here at all, I just felt and did not know what to do. Why feel the need to call me 13 years old and tell me to stop it? Stop what?

When she said “I’m going to ask you questions and you can just say “yes”, or “no” or “I’m not going to say”” your reply should have been “no you are not going to ask me any questions. the topic is closed. If you want information, you need to ask him directly.”

Why did I say to stop acting 13 years old? Because this is behavior typically seen in junion high, not with adults. Or at least, this is not how adults should behave.

It was not your place to tell her his personal business. Again, it is the sin of detraction.

You’re right, I should not have said anything from the start. Even though that would still start something, because I know once she found out she would think I was a bad friend. But, you are right. Wish I never said anything at all.

I am CERTAIN her parents are happy you told her.

Of course her and her parents are going to be happy I told her. But, when I think about it, it was not the right thing of me to do.
Then go with your conscience - go to confession and ask for forgiveness.
