So I was talking with a friend about situations we come upon during life. He feels that God puts us in situations; for example, if we need to work on patience, God “puts” us in situations in order to become patient. To me that sounds like a God that is treating us like chess pieces. I, on the other hand, believe that we just come upon situations and we can rely on Gods grace or not. But, I could be wrong because I also believe that God does put certain people in your life. Can anyone help me make sense of this? Maybe the Catechism mentions this?

Well I think either view can be used. In fact I would say that both approaches are at lest to some extent correct. Sometimes God might put us in situations, other times they might just occur randomly.

But regardless, we must rely on God’s grace, and our own strength added to grow in Holiness.
