I want to bring this into the discussion because of the high profile excommunication of a mormon on this section of the forum. As we can see all churches excommunicate members. And yes, these nuns are receiving publicity.

My point: one can not criticize the mormons for excommunicating a high priesthood holder when the catholic church does the same for its members who are classified as heretics.

In 2000 the Vatican weighed in on those doctrinal issues. Then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, acting as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, wrote to the Canadian bishops to warn of the “gravely erroneous” material appearing in publications of the Army of God. Among those doctrinal errors was the claim that Marie-Paule Giguere was the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary.

The Army of God provoked a fresh confrontation with Church leaders this year when one of its priests, Father Jean-Pierre Mastropietro, attempted to ordain 6 other men without episcopal approval. That action led Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the current head of the Quebec archdiocese, to declare that the ordinations were invalid and those involved had separated themselves from communion with the Catholic Church.

This week’s declaration from Rome confirms Cardinal Ouellet’s judgment, announcing the excommunication of Father Mastropietro, the men he claimed to have ordained, and other members of the Army of God who “entered into schism by participating in the ordinations.”

No problem Dosdog. I agree with the excommunication. But some catholics on this board should not run to defend a ‘heretical’ mormon if they cannot defend their own who were excommunicated. 🙂

I have personally met some 100+ people and indirectly know of approximately 1000 that were excommunicated during “the Mormon purge” that took place from around 1991 through 1995. I was running a study group called The American Study group that grew to around 4000 participants in 1990. The purpose was to fulfill Ezra Taft Benson’s (President at the time) General Conference edict, “Do you know what the prophets have said about the Constitution and the threats to it?” We studied prophecies and freedom on a weekly basis in a number of branch locations throughout the Rocky Mountain West.

I am not going to make this thread into a mormon bash. The catholic church has excommunicated six nuns. Some are rather old. From whence do they get food and funds? What about pensions etc. What about livelihood?

My point is: all churches excommunicate. Period. Don’t cast a stone at mormons if catholics do the same.

The struggle for control
As elders in the Church, both Brigham Young and Strang claimed to have been chosen by Smith to succeed him, and a power struggle ensued between the two, as they clamored for Church supremacy. The Mormon followers quickly chose sides as either “Brighamites” of “Strangites.”

Strang even produced a document that he claimed was written by Smith some time before his death, stating that Strang was to be Smith’s successor. While the document may have swayed a few fence-sitters into the “Strangite” camp, it was not sufficient to the beliefs of the majority. Thus, Young won the struggle and assumed leadership of the Church. Young immediately excommunicated Strang, and soon thereafter led his followers to Utah.

But we’re not doing the same. In this case the Catholic Church excommunicated nuns who belonged to a group that embraced heresy. The LDS excommunicates people for as little as supporting the ERA, discussing the findings of their scientific research or questioning the history of their church. :hmmm:

Apples and oranges.

I usually keep my nose out of theirs and other denominations business, but I can’t say the same is true for many of them in regards to keeping their nose out of the Catholic Church, many for whom their existence depends on being anti-Catholic.

If they ask an opinion I give it, apart from that I let them be.

You said it, Snowfly. 👍

Has any Catholic been excommunicated for telling people of what they have read at a Catholic, Church run website (in the modern age of course)?

I don’t think so.

I think the nuns were well aware of the consequences of their actions.

I would be more upset to know how long they got a free ride from the Church while being disobedient to her.

Maybe their “Mary” will help them now.

I agree with you… since they are ordained to be the bearer/vessel of the Catholic Church, their Teachings and Faith must be in line with the Catholic Faith.
and i think excommunication is not an easy decision.

God Bless…

The mormon was excommunicated for blowing the whistle on the falsity of mormonism. He could very well suffer the consequences of his actions ie: loss of livlihood, pension, friends etc. The nuns should have thought about the consequences of their actions after being strongly warned. They were excommunicated for blatant and unapologetic heresy. The interest in this case is powered by the fact that the excommunication of religious is so rare. They are abberations rather than being the commonplace, as are mormon and JW excommunications.

I can’t work out what your problem is. When the Catholic Church excommunicates somebody, it means that they can’t receive the Catholic Sacrament of the Eucharist until they repent and confess their sin. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with starving them or withholding their pensions. If they are nuns, it doesn’t mean they are not nuns any more either.

Ah, I did not know this either, so thanks for pointing it out. In the mormon church, excommunication means everything is made null and void. Baptism, confrmation, marriage (still valid as a civil marriage), priesthood for men, everything is removed, not just the privilege of taking the Sacrament. For a person to re-enter the mormon church after excommunication, they must be re-baptized.

Catholics believe that the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders place an indelible mark on the soul which nobody can ever remove under any circumstances whatsoever. A person can never be un-baptised, un-confirmed, nor un-ordained, nor re-baprised, re-confirmed nor re-ordained. Excommunication is a medicinal remedy intended to bring the erring Catholic to his senses and prompt him to repent of his sin.

Actually, the lds church does not excommunicate members for questioning the history of their church. There is nothing wrong with questioning such things. However, if one begins to speak false doctrine and teach it, then excommunication can occur. Not not for questioning church history or even for questioning doctrine. It is in the preaching and not the questioning. Likewise for scientific research.

My point is simple: members of both groups know what is excommunicable and what isn’t. In the end, both excommunicate.

Good statement, however, where is the proof? It seems that catholics on this section of the forum are certainly sticking their noses into the lds church. Just an observation. I don’t believe that the lds existence depends on anticatholicism. Please don’t move the goal post. The subject is six nuns were excommunicated and I posted it only because of the thread about the mormon being excommunicated and the comments of the catholics.

My point: both mormons and catholics know the rules of their churches. And both churches excommunicate if one steps over the line.

No one is excommunicated for telling people what they read on a website. It is in the preaching and not in the telling. It is in the believing that turns into preaching and not in the telling.

What would happen to me (as a catholic) if I began a pro-choice website and began to speak out against the catholic stance on pro-life? Should I be excommuicated? Would I be excommunicated? 🤷

Would a priest be excommunicated for doing the same thing?
