Skipping a Pep Rally- Mortal Sin?

I got a question for you guys. One of my teachers at school may let me stay inside her room during pep rallies. However, I am not sure the school administration would allow it. If it turns out school administration requires all students to go to pep rallies, but my teacher disobeys that rule and lets me stay in her room, would I have committed a mortal sin if I stay inside my teacher’s room? I intend to ask my teacher tomorrow, though I’m guessing that this probably isn’t grave matter and at most, this is venial, and I’m being scrupulous.

I don’t like pep rallies. Plus, I can do other productive things, though I may end up going to the pep rally and offer my feelings and my time I get there to God.

This may not be relevant, but you’re not alone in feeling pep rallies are an example of useless tribal tomfoolery. When I was in high school, my sophomore year, so many people requested to be allowed to skip them that the administration finally changed the rules and let people have the option of staying in homeroom rather than go to them.

People who say they’re indispensably important to forming citizens with character are often the same people who scream for funding football programs at any cost while being content to let music or art programs (for example) get the budgetary axe.

You are right, this is no where near the “grave matter” level and I wouldn’t worry about it.

At absolute worst you are committing a venial sin, chill out.

There can be no moral requirement whatsoever for a person to attend such an event. It is entirely up to you. Indeed, I would have thought that freedom of speech specifically mandated your right NOT to attend if you didn’t want to.

There was no sin whatsoever in not attending. Not mortal. Not venial. Not even ‘far occasion’ of sin, let alone near.

PS: Thinking about it, I would say that there might be more sin in compelling someone to attend such a rally, as the results of such a ‘rally’ could be said to make an idol out of something that is earthly and not Godly.

On a different level, as a mom it would trouble me if you were my child and staying alone in a classroom. I would much rather my child be in a place that has been set up for her to safely wait - possibly helping in the library or studying in an assigned safe place - not alone - not alone with one adult.

I also would be concerned if a teacher was breaking rules. If this is against school policy for you to be in the classroom during pep rallies, I would have concerns about a teacher who breaks the rule. I say this not from a problem with scrupulosity, but for safety reasons.

I would much rather my child be in a place that has been set up for her to safely wait - possibly helping in the library or studying in an assigned safe place - not alone - not alone with one adult.

I also would be concerned if a teacher was breaking rules. If this is against school policy for you to be in the classroom during pep rallies, I would have concerns about a teacher who breaks the rule. I say this not from a problem with scrupulosity, but for safety reasons.

Not quite true. We are to obey our parents, as well as civil authorities as long as their orders do not require us to sin or take away our rights. As a minor, the school and its officials do have legitimate authority, especially since his parents enrolled him there.

But the basic question has been answered: it’s a minor point, at worst a venial sin (no grave matter, simply disobeying a burdensome requirement which may verge on infringing his rights).

I don’t understand either. It seems quite sensible from a parent’s point of view.

If you had said: “YES, it’s a motal sin!!! Please, please, PLEASE don’t do this! Your teacher is leading you astray! Contact the School board immediately!”.

That would be an over reaction.
