I just read this post in “ask an appologist”:
I thought I’d seen everything, but last Sunday our associate priest walked up to read the Gospel as expected, then stepped away from the lectern and said “let’s skip this for today; we’ve all heard this one before”. He then proceeded to paraphrase the story of the prodigal son in an entertaining and humorous way and received an ovation when done.

He seemed very pleased as he returned to his ‘throne’ to take in the applause and allow us time for reflection.

I don’t even know what I’d do if I saw something like that at a church here.

I would also talk to the priest privately. These abuses need to be stopped.

I read the posting. I would of probably walked out and reported him to the Bishop. From the reaction, it seem this parish prefers this and would be hostile to anyone who challenges it.

That wouldn’t stop me. I’m always ready to respond to hostile dissenters with the right mix of love and reason. 😃

  1. Talk to him
  2. Talk to the pastor
    3)Call the Bishop.
    3b) Pray for them all.

I would think it is litrgucally wrong but I wouldn’t complain. I think I probably would have enjoyed hearing that priest’s version of the story for a change. I might have even aplauded as well. In fact, the best part about that gospel is for once I can legitamately doze off or have my mind wander and still say I listened to the gospel since I know what it is already. However, it would have been better if he read the gospel quickly and then told his version in his homily. Not like it takes more than a couple minutes to say a gospel.

Your response perplexes me. You doze during mass and feel justified in doing so because you heard the Gospel before?

Why do you even go to church?

If you go to church and sleep, thinking you met your Sunday obligation, I believe you should read the Gospels again, in particular the part about adhering to the letter of the law rather than following the spirit of the law…
