$25 per month for 7 channels (all I’d watch on the line up…)

On Dish TV, I could get the channels I’d watch on sky angel PLUS Food TV, for 19.99 🙂

Well I counted 15 channels I would watch - about 10 we didn’t get on Dish for the $19.99 price. Food TV would be nice to get again (we currently are only getting over the air on none DTV’s and our converter boxes seemed to have already quit working well - need to try a roof-top antenna before I totally give up on that idea).

So, the question is does Dish now have either of the Hallmark channels on it’s regular line-up or are they on a more premium plan?

Thanks. When we were on Dish all those were premium channels, looks like they are on the basic Family plan. Hmmm, maybe we need to sign up again.

When we had Sky Angel, it was all Protestant channels, except for one Catholic channel–the ??something?? Family Apostolate, It was good, lots of stuff from Cardinal Arinze. But a lot of Protestantism to wade through.

Skyangel is a really good option. It does offer a lot of protestant channels but hey you get ewtn, ewtn esp, catholic tv, ewtn radio, tvu (christian mtv), hallmark, fox news, nfl network, college sports tv, hgtv, animal planet, and many others for 25 bucks a month. Yeah you pay like 5 bucks more and get way more channels with dish or direct but you have none of the language, lewdness, or anti christian rhetoric that you would see on the satellite providers.

However, make sure you have a good broadband connection. It needs to be constant at around 3 mb. Skyangel runs off your internet connection and no longer just a 12’’ dish. If you wonder if your connection is fast enough go to skyangel.com and they have a diagnostic test to show you.

We’ve been SkyAngel subscribers for years now and love it! If you decide to go down that path let me know. We’ve got several coupons for a free trial month with no strings. One thing that we like is that even with the screened channel line up, they still filter the shows that are on it. For example, one of the HallMark channels had a movie on a few weeks ago where one of the characters said darn (or rather someone slightly stronger). SkyAngel bleeped that out 👍 For some of the channels (such as EWTN) they support limited timeshifting – that is you can watch shows up to 48 hours after they were broadcast. The last time I checked we get about 65 or so channels(the program guide is here skyangel.com/Programming/Guide.asp?x=003|005|000&~= ), with 4 or 5 of those being Catholic channels. I really wish they would bring back FamilyLand, but I’ll settle for EWTN and Catholic TV for now.

As others have noted there are a few things to be aware of:
  • You do have to wade through the non-Catholic material* With the new IPTV setup they use there is no way built into the system to block specific channels (such as the Home Shopping Network or the channel that shows 24/7 presentations of the 700 club 🤷 )
  • You have to have a fast, solid internet connection. It will not work over ADSL, ISDN, Satellite, Mobile Broadband (cellular), or Dialup.
  • The IPTV hardware they use has both wired and wireless support, but the wireless side only supports WEP encryption (no WPA/WPA2).
  • The service is designed for a single TV Only. If you want to watch independent content on multiple TV’s you need multiple boxes (each consuming ~700k-1.5MB of bandwidth). With a single box you can however watch the same show on multiple TV’s with a splitter.
  • No HDTV. Content is Standard Def MPEG2.
  • Lastly understand you are supporting a Protestant organization.

…and no NESN to watch the Red Sox!

Well, since none of us are sports fans we don’t need any channels for that purpose ;).

I might look back into Dish. We canceled service a year ago and now with the DTV switch coming up I got two converter boxes for our old tvs but like I said, they worked great when we first hooked up but in the last couple of weeks they seem to have started to really lose their signals! Patience may be all I need, maybe the Channels we like are just having a problem because of the switch over or something, like the signal is kind of week. We need to try a roof-top antenna too, I just don’t know if I want to go back to paying for tv!
