I searched for these topics but found none, so I am asking the question. Is skydiving and extreme sports (racing, rock climbing, skating) a sin? Reason I ask is because I am going skydiving in 2 months and it will be my second time. Since my first time (over 2 years ago) I’ve become more devout Catholic, praying the Rosary, going to Mass, and confession. I am not afraid of jumping off the plane since I am a risk taker, but I am afraid that if, God forbid, I died I might go to hell?
Now, we take risk everyday, when we dive, get on a plane, ride a bike, play sports, and other things. We constantly put our lives at risk, so I wonder what’s different from these other sports?

Skydiving without a parachute would be a sin, certainly. Extreme sports in and of themselves I wouldn’t consider sinful. Athletes and drivers with a degree of genius in how they can use their bodies in extraordinary and courageous ways give others a sense of awe and wonder and inspiration. These athletes take “leaps of faith” in their sports and their pursuits can become spiritual disciplines.

I’m going to say that there is no difference. At most, I guess one could argue that it depends on your intentions. If you are planning on jumping out of the plane and HOPING to die or something like that, then that is a problem. But doing it because you enjoy it, then I can’t see a problem with it.

I will add that if there is a reason that you are worried about going to hell (i.e. being in mortal sin) then you should get that taken care of right away.
