I believe that when thing’s happen to us whatever they are there is a reason. One thing that may help is this, think about what could be bothering you, even if you think all is fine. But if blood work, etc all is checked physically it could be God’s way of just getting your attention.

Remember alot of thing’s with God are still a mystery. Maybe what to try is this. Everytime this happens write down everything that you can remember that day, no matter how small write it down. What you ate, who you talked to what you did, Everything,

Keep a diary. Then go back every now and then and see if there’s a pattern. Anything alike. It may be Gods way of telling you something. Maybe it something that you need to quit doing, or who knows. But I think if you try this it may give you a answer of some sort.

Were the candles made from beeswax? I know that it is a requirement for candles adorning the altar to be made from beeswax.
The cheapo ones from the supermarket contain mostly paraffin and I suspect the quality of that material was very poor. The glass tops would get all sooty; sometimes the wick would drift and snuff itself out on the side of the cylinder if it didn’t heat the glass long enough to crack.
I would make sense that votive candles also be made from beeswax. I would want the candles I light to last as long as possible. Cheap candles burn down quickly. Higher quality candles would be more economical in the long run.
I agree. I was told by the church secretary that the pastor invested some $700 or so for beeswax tapers.

I have been slain in the Spirit, and I have also experienced what OP describes during Mass. The first was while I was actually in a group praying for release of the charisms of the Holy Spirit and praying to Him specifically to work in my life and to surrender my will to His. The second was typical low blood sugar episode I have learned to recognize as I learn more about my diabetes. I suggest focusing on possible physical causes first, perhaps paying attention to what has been going on with you–food, sleep, meds, other influences–before you assume there is a spiritual thing happening. Continue doing what you are doing, namely report odd symptoms to your doctor. If you are really being “slain in the Spirit” or you are attending the type of worship where this is an expected event you should always be accompanied by someone trained to assist people when it happens, to make sure they don’t fall, hit their head etc…

I don’t think, this is my opinion, that there is any room on this forum for anyone to bash the spirituality of another, particularly a spiritual expression that has been endorsed by the Church, simply because one is not accustomed to it or comfortable with it.

I How we found the cause, I don’t know exactly, but we now know that the inexpensive votive candles bought at the supermarket, lit by well-meaning church members and placed in the votive stands to either side of the sanctuary were giving off soot and odorless fumes that made quite a few people sick, my son included.

these are extremely popular here, and have been banned for use in churches by our local fire chief (who is also on parish council) because they are a fire hazard as well as emitting harmful fumes. parishioners must by approved candles from the church office.

it has been over 100 year for a couple of weeks, and even with the AC & fans running all night it still gets into the 80s by the time of noon Mass, and people are dropping right and left. I think OP did the right thing to ask her priest about it, because if more people have the experience he can consider other environmental causes. If you have really been “slain in the Spirit” he should help you discern the signs that this might be so–increased willingness to serve, to do more, to ask for gifts of the Holy Spirit, to desire the Eucharist more etc.

To our parish’s credit. I don’t see anymore supermarket votives. The staff must be policing the church on a frequent basis.

Maybe we do see real Spirit-slain cases in our church but just like Jesus told Nicodemus, “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” Jn3:8. What I mean is real Spirit-slain Catholics answer the call to serve in the parish in various capacities. The Spriit-slain Catholics are converting and turning their lives around. All quietly and without fanfare.

My two cents.

There are several places where people fell to the ground: “Paul on the road to Damascus”, “the soldiers fell backward after Jesus said I am He”, and in the old testament “the priests could not stand to minister when the glory of the Lord appeared”.
