Hope this is ok to ask…
I’m still trying to find out what the book Jesus is holding in a Pantocrator icon says. I contacted the monks who sell them online and through book stores and none of the monks there can read it; all they would say was that it’s Slavonic. Is there anyone here who reads Slavonic languages who might be able to translate? I’d appreciate it so much. I’ve had the icon for several years and it’s beautiful, but I feel like I’m missing the point of it.
(I’ve scanned and saved to My Pictures but I’m getting an upload error; suggestions appreciated.)

You may send me the picture via e-mail and I’d try to translate. I don’t promise finding exact english Bible quote, but I may just translate the saying itself. If it’s readable, of course 🙂
Send it to inity(at)mail.ru, if you want.

There are a number of us who can do so, depending upon age and dialect.

Most of the Pantocrator Icons i’ve seen have a closed book.

My native language is russian and I usually don’t have trouble reading something in church-slavonic. But if your icon has something in other language than church-slavonic, then you’d need to find someone else to help you 🙂

Aramis,
Ditto for my research; the books are almost always closed. But this one’s open.

Inity, thanks -
I’ll send it email and we’ll see what happens.

I wish I could figure out how to attach it to a post; it’s quite beautiful. A treasured belonging.

If you’d send it to me, I can upload it to my web-server and post a picture in this thread, if you want. 🙂

Inity, yes, that would be great - I just sent it to you.

Thankyou SO much, Inity! You’ll be in my prayers tonight in gratitude. Mystery Solved!

In this case, it’s “Come to me, you who labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest…”

The only reason I could tell you is I recognized the first word.

What is the significance in this icon of Christ’s holding his thumb to the third finger?

This is the form of blessing used in the Eastern Church.

By holding his fingers in a certain manner, the Eastern priest can for the letters IC XC which stands for Jesus Christ in Greek.

The index finger is held straight, the 2nd finger is curved slightly and together they form the I and C

The thumb is crossed over the ring finger and the pinky is curved and they form the X and C.

In many ikons, it appears that the tips of the thumb and ring finger touch but that’s not true, they are crossed.

Hope this helps…

Thank you, everybody. It came from a Catholic book store so it’s just a mounted icon of no value, but I had an immediate reponse to the expression of Jesus, which seemed kind.

It comes from a Bulgarian Orthodox skete that was founded in 1987. With all the discussion of stuff that’s occurred with Monastery, I decided to do a little research. How can a person know for sure that the activities of monks and the icons they produce are “safe”, particularly with icons that are sold through vendors or purchased over the internet? And, not meaning to hijack my own thread, but if an icon were from a questionable source, would having it blessed as a sacramental by a priest make it “safe” spiritually?

Not entirely, since the icons are, in fact, used as texts for education of the faithful. Well, not so much as they used to be when most peasants were illiterate or semiliterate. Further they are based in tradition. They are collections of visual cues for remembering the biblical and saint’s lives stories.

First word is truly “come”, but it’s “come to me, o blesseds of my Father” etc. (I don’t know exact english bible quote - but it’s Matthew, 25, verses 34-36, as I said above.)

Re Aramis’ response:

So the “safety”, or lack of, only applies to the icon re transmittal of religious Truth?

From the article I read on a CA home page link re the questionable producer of icons, there was concern over the potential for the icons having been produced under far worse ‘influence’ than simply non-Christian.

How can a person be sure?

ICON SPAS

This icon you have is copy of Icon Savior All-doing of famous Moskow icon painter Simon (Pimen) Ushakov. Can find a site below of all of such icons known. He is quite popular among Westerns because does not follow classic icon style but is somewhat more “realism” painting. His style is called Moskow armory icon style after palata where he is working in 17th century.

Not “Only”. It’s one of several concerns.

Generally, I buy my icons at churches. Byzantine Catholic or Russian Orthodox.

Good advice, Aramis; if I buy any more that’s where I’ll get them. Maybe if I can ever work out my elder caregiving schedule to go to Divine Liturgy at the Byzantine church…

Volodymyr,
Thank you for the information and link, which is wonderful. I can’t read it of course, but enjoyed looking. I also briefly looked up information on the iconographer and will go back in after while and read some more. Interesting man. After seeing some of his other work, the thing that most stands out is the vibrant color, especially the crimson. Beautiful Last Supper and Archangel Michael.

FYI to everyone on the thread, when I googled the artist, this thread came up fourth on the google page…
