Do you think that it is correct to sleep without any clothing and to raise the children in this way?
there is no moral issue at all in sleeping nude if you are alone or with your spouse. In what manner could anyone justify being nude with their children in the bed, other than in a situation such as nursing a baby? just curious as to what rationalization a parent could give for this. the children should have their own privacy in their own bedrooms protected when they are old enough to sleep alone, and if they are sharing a room, privacy and respect would dictate they sleep with something on.

DH and I have very different internal thermostats. I’m always cold and he’s always hot. So, I sleep in long pjs with my pants tucked into my socks and shirt tucked into pants and he sleeps in his boxer shorts or else nothing at all. he throws his robe on when he gets up in the morning, not that our DS notices or cares at this age. I can’t imagine it would come down to anything but personal preference. DS still sleeps in footie pajamas :p.

Are you suggesting that there is link between abuse and sleeping in the nude?
I’m suggesting there is link between abuse and families who have such boundary problems that they don’t preserve modesty in the home. Such as a family in which the parents might think it’s ok for their son to walk into his sister’s bedroom to wake her up, even though she’s sprawled out buck naked on the bed asleep. The view that the son would get, would at the least, be scandalous, and in light of a family with other boundary problems, it could be dangerous. Now granted, no one is suggesting that this is how nude sleeping might play out in their family, but in my house, people occasionally enter the bedrooms of other people while they’re sleeping. There are six of us and 3 bedrooms. People don’t sleep alone. So it is unfathomable to me that anyone in my family could sleep in the nude regularly, and not at the very least hurt the innocence of some of the children in our household. And I’ve got lots of friends with kids, and none of them is able to offer their children the kind of privacy that would enable nude sleeping.

Now the fact that some of you say it is “do-able” - well I’m not in your household, and I’ll have to take you at your word. I’m not implicating nude-sleepers as abusers. Only making the point that modesty is important WITHIN the family, not just outside the home. If a family can truly preserve modesty and sleep in the nude, then I can’t complain.

Modesty and nudity are not, however, mutually exclusive. There are places and times when nudity is not at all immodest, and what these are depends a lot on cultural background. Here in North America there is not really much public nudity, except perhaps in change rooms and the occasional nude beach, and medical settings.

In other places people go to public baths or saunas in the nude, or it is considered normal to go topless at the beach, or in some places people wear very little in the way of clothes at all.

But even within North America, families compose a kind of “little culture”. Some families are very private, others quite casual about nudity. Being nude within the family setting does not equal immodesty. No boundaries are being ignored because the boundary doesn’t exist where you think it should (unless someone asks for more privacy and it is ignored.)

Now, in a family which was FAR outside the cultural norms with regard to personal boundries, one would have to wonder. It would be very outside the norm here, for example, for a whole family to share a bedroom and the parents to have sex with the kids in the same room at night beyond infancy, though it is quite common in other times and places. But even if the family actually came from such a place, the fact that it would be so far outside the norm here could in itself be a problem.

So - what I am saying is preserving modesty in the family does not mean that there can be no nudity. It has to do with respect for others bodies and feelings.

I am not yet a parent because I’m still single, but I can speak from my own experience as a child. I would say you don’t really even need to mention the subject, but at the same time, you also don’t need to hide the fact that that’s how you sleep.

I’m now 30 and have slept in the nude regularly since I was about 12. Although I knew my father did (at least sometimes), I didn’t start because of his example. It was a conscious decision I made on my own as I began to mature and realized it didn’t really make sense (to me, anyway) to wear anything when alone in my own bed. It’s a comfort thing.

You didn’t say how old your children are or whether they’re male of female, but I do have just one caution. It’s a very real possiblity for it to turn into an occasion of sin for a teenager. Add typical teenage hormones with the very unique sensation of being naked in bed for the first time, and you can do the math. Maybe it would be different for girls, but I say this from experience as a man - for the first few years I slept nude, the feeling of the sheets rubbing against the more sensitive parts of my body would cause me to lose control of my urges quite easily due to the sheer novelty of it. Definitely by the time I was in my mid teens, though, the novelty had warn off and I was totally used to sleeping nude without being preoccupied with nudity every second, if that makes sense.

I would simply not say anything about the subject - if your children want to sleep in the nude, they’ll discover it naturally on their own.

Speaking from experience, because I have been a nude sleeper since I was thirteen years old, I agree that in the beginning, sleeping naked could increase a teen boy’s normal urge to play with his exposed and unrestricted penis, or even to actually masturbate. But I don’t think the degree of increase is anything worth mentioning. All teen males have a strong propensity to masturbate, and I do not believe that there is any significant increase in the frequency of masturbation for teens sleeping in either their PJ’s, or underwear or birthday suit. Any teen male can always simply slip off his underwear whenever he feels the need to masturbate.

I will not try to address sleeping habits for females, since I am a male. But I think parents should allow, or even encourage, their sons of any age to sleep in the nude, at least after a bath or shower, even if they are sharing a bedroom with another brother. Sleeping nude is more natural, more comfortable, and definitely there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. ‘Sleeping in the raw’ as we used to call it, is not immodest or indecent, especially among other family members. I cannot understand why anyone needs to wear any kind of clothing to bed.

Do you think that it is correct to sleep without any clothing and to raise the children in this way?
Correct? Only if you teach them to wash their bedsheets everyday. Those sheets have been as close to the body as underwear…sooo…my rule is sleep in the buff…change the sheets everyday just as you would change your underwear everyday…right? right.

I don’t know about how ‘correct’ it might be. Frankly, I don’t care about correctness in the eyes of others. It’s not like we invite the world in to judge our bedtime routines, right? 😃 My daughter might run around in PJs or a T-shirt and panties until bedtime, but as soon as we say bedtime prayers, off go the jammies and she snuggles under her blankets with just underwear on. The only time we insist upon PJs is when it is going to be bitter cold outside overnight (very rare in the Deep South).
My son sleeps in a diaper and T-shirt. My husband sleeps in underwear only. And I sleep in underwear plus a camisole (occasionally a T-shirt). So it’s not really just two choices: full PJs vs. naked. Everybody should be allowed to find their level of comfort, IMO.

Beautiful - I see your point, but it seems like washing sheets every day is excessive, especially if one showers before bed, in which case every part of the body is just as clean as the rest. Personally, even though I usually wait until morning to shower, I still only wash sheets once a week. I’d want fresh sheets weekly even if I didn’t sleep naked. A body that showers daily is never really “dirty” in the age of modern hygeine. 😛

Excessive? not really…if someone sleeps butt naked in bed all night then it is time to wash the sheets in the morning. In this modern age of hygiene people put on fresh clean underpants every day…I hope.
Anyway - as someone already mentioned…sleeping naked isn’t a moral issue but rather a personal preference or life style choice. Others mentioned have a robe handy for modesty outside the bed…that is very important.

I agree with Beautiful, if you’re gonna sleep in the buff, wash those sheets daily. OR if you’re one to shower at night right before bed, maybe every other day would work.

p.s. I showed my husband this thread and he says that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, which makes it sacred and therefore should be veiled.

I believe that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit ( 1 Cor 6:19), but I don’t understand why it should be covered.
Personally I sleep naked and I think that there is nothing immoral (moreover it is very comfortable and hygienic).

Do you wash your PJs every day?

The comment about veiling the body because it’s a temple of the Holy Spirit brings up a good point. I can only speak for myself, but assuming those of use who sleep in the nude are under the covers, would not the body indeed be “veiled”?

I grew up in a VERY modest household. My parents bathed all children one at a time because throwing 2 kids in the same bath tub was considered scandoulous even though I was 1 and my brother was 3. When that story got out in high school we were often mocked for being prudes.

I am a girl and a friend of mine (the ring leader in mocking me) was a girl as well. Now that I am older I strongly suspect that it was jealousy on her part. When she was 12, her mother tried to lift her shirt while she was watching TV in the living room with her 15 year old brother. When my friend said ‘I don’t want to lift my shirt in front of my brother’ Her mother stared at her chest and said ‘lift it up I want to see if there is something there’. How cruel !. This girl was raised that unless a girl has a woman’s body she was an idiot for wanting privacy.

When that girl started dating, she was always scared of being called an idiot so she NEVER said no to her dates. And she suffered for it.

When I started dating the only time I did not have underwear on was when I was sitting on the toilet or in the shower. And I must admit, when showering, I always waited to the last possible second to take my underwear off. And the 5 seconds I was totally naked before actually being in the shower was always a very ackward moment even with the batroom door locked.

I am now 40 and always sleep with something on. I will quickly change in front of others in the gym locker room but I am NOT and hope will NEVER be one of those woman who dry their hair in the nude or have long winded conversations in the nude with others. I take my clothes off and on and am only naked for a maximum of 10 seconds.

Do I think my parents were over strict ? Yes I think they over did it. However, I am VERY gratefull that they instilled privacy in me. At 40 and never married, I am proud to say I am still pure and if ever God sends a man my way, I will have a gift to give my husband.

And for thoses of you who are wondering, by society’s standards, I AM good looking 😉

Nights (even summer nights) can be chilly here in upstate NY. In the wintertime? Forget about it. You’d freeze.

Seriously, I usually have some kind of pjs that cover my shoulders, and wouldn’t trust in bed linens to keep me warm. I’m a restless sleeper, and kick off the covers.

I’d freeze if I tried to sleep in the nude, so the morality of it has never even occurred to me. And like a couple of other posters have said, what if a fire breaks out or a burglar breaks in, in the middle of the night?

Children and parents generally do not have the level of privacy that would enable them to keep from being “walked in on.”
I agree with this poster. Its not wrong to sleep nude, but with kids you just never know when one of them will appear in the middle of the night (sick, can’t sleep, too hot, too cold, scary dream). Sometimes one of them ends up in the bed and you don’t even know where he/she came from - where did you come from? Better to have something on if you have kids - its just not that private in our house.

sleeping with clothes on or sleeping naked, doesn’t matter. as long as they’re not sharing a bed with anyone, lol.

I’d have to agree it’s not a good idea if you have young children, who are liable (as I was as a kid) to clamber into bed with Mum and Dad every so often.

Hopefully older children wouldn’t be ill-mannered enough to go into anyone else’s bedroom without knocking and making sure those within were decent!
