I have been looking all over for the answer to this: what is the meaning to the sleeping St Joseph statues?

Pope Francis has one and puts written prayers under it (the statue). But I’m dying understand the symbolism of the sleeping figure. Is it from the bible? I can’t find it.

When I go to daily Mass early in the morning, there is one parishoner who habitually sleeps during the whole liturgy. Not only that, he snores loudly.

After one particularly loud snoring session, after the homily, our priest said, “Don’t let his sleeping bother you. Perhaps he’s communicating with Our Lord in the manner of St. Joseph.”

I didn’t understand the meaning of what he said at first; later I realized that St. Joseph received all his revelations in his dreams. Just like the Joseph of the Old Testament.

LOL! I love your priest.

It’s great that the guy still makes it to daily Mass! 😃

But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him** in a dream** and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Joseph and Mary were already married at the time of the Annunciation, but had not moved into their home together yet. God Bless, Memaw

This is the reason behind the statue. It shows us that God will speak to us, whether we are “awake” or not. He can always find a way to tell us whatever we need to know. 👍
