I woke up this morning to find that my scapular had broken in my sleep. I bought two, and this is the newer one that broke (so, not happy). I still have the “older” one, but I’m worried about this one breaking, too. Should I just take it off before bed? Or is there another way to prevent this (and can the broken one be salvaged)?

Many scapulars are not made well. I am actually planning to sew one of my own eventually. However, the standard one with the silk cords that you get when you are invested at an official Carmelite monastery or shrine is quite durable, I’ve found. I have been wearing one now for about a year and a half and it has not broken. I do wear it to bed. I take it off for showers and occasionally to launder it (during which time I wear a “backup”). The first one I had from a Catholic gift shop broke almost immediately.

This is the exact one I wear, it is very well made. Mine does not have a medal or crucifix on it because it didn’t come with a medal and I further understand it is not strictly proper to hang medals and things on your scapular. I got it from the World Apostolate of Fatima Shrine for free when I was invested. The white cords will turn a bit beige over time.

For the broken one, you can re-sew it or replace the cord, if you like.

I am in agreement with Tis. I picked up a couple at a Carmelite shrine seven months ago and the original one is still as good as new. I wear it 24/7 only removing it to shower. It is made in Vietnam and was only 3.98. I don’t think it’s wool, however. Some kind of synthetic, if that’s important to you. Now they also sell ones encased in plastic for like a but, but those will stick to you, and the cords feel cheaper.

Every time we buy a scapular we should be supporting a congregation of religious, those who make them. They are quite inexpensive.

I go through one or two a year. i wear one at all times except in bathing. i sometimes tie an extra knot for structural support.

I don’t wear one but if I did, I wouldn’t sleep with it. I toss and turn in my sleep. Why do people wear this 24/7? I wear a MM but not every day/every hour, no. I think that would make it less special, no?

I’ve had to do that with my current one. I replaced the original cords with a stronger cord. But will soon need to get a new replacement due to the picture on one wearing quite thin.

These aids such as scapular and miraculous medals remind us of our faith, incentivize us to pray, and help us to receive additional grace.

Why would we relegate them only to “special occasions”? We need those helps 24/7!!!

We wear them as much as possible because that’s what the devotion calls for us to do. One has to be a faithful wearer of the sacramental daily, especially if one is enrolled in the Scapular or a member of one of the Miraculous Medal associations (AMM or CAMM).

If it is disturbing your sleep, it’s okay to take it off at night, but I don’t have any issues sleeping with my scapular and Miraculous Medal on.

I wear the woolen scapular to bed at night and a scapular medal during the day. The only time I am without it is when bathing.

I have a scapular question of my own. My old Brown one broke last year and I received another one, but the threads gave out within a few weeks, but I’ve kept it together with a paper clip and some staples where the threads meet the laminated plastic that contains the brown wool. Do I need a new one, or is this still OK?

It would be good to get a new one (just so you don’t have to walk around with metal scraping against your skin/clothes), but AFAIK that’s OK.

I wear washable scapulars. I keep several of them rotating as needed and yes I wear mine to bed but not in the shower or bathing.

It is an individual devotion. Some people wear them 24/7 and never take them off, others wear or don’t wear them accordingly. There is no right or wrong with these devotions. Just as there is no right or wrong with prayer. Not wearing them 24/7 certainly does not make them any more or less special. It is the intention of the person wearing them that counts, not the sacramental itself. For example a 24/7 wearer puts the scapular on and then forgets about it, forgets about praying compared with someone who puts one on and piously pursues a prayer life or Religious activity while the scapular is on. Or carried. The same would go for miraculous medals.
I am also not a fan of spreading or burying Miraculous Medals. The heart of the person must be converted to faith, so gift the Medal to the person, even if they then put it in the bottom of the wardrobe.

I wear mine 24/7, only take it off when showering or swimming (and I do not go swimming often). I will say that it is difficult at first to get used to sleeping in it, but this passes after a few days, and I have been wearing one for over 20 years now. (Not the same scapular, they deteriorate after a few years even with washing them.) I have found that the Rose Scapular company makes the best-quality scapulars.

It’s an individual decision, but do consider the scapular promise, and realize that many people die in their sleep. You will hear people say “oh, that’s the way I want to go”, but as for myself, I want to have a priest by my side, and receive all the indulgences I can. But we don’t always get a choice in that matter.

WE must trust in God and pray there is a priest to give us last rites if needed. Best thing we can do though is to stay in or keep getting back into a state of grace.
Regular confession and Sacraments.

I wear my Miraculous Medal 24/7. I purchased a sterling one and wear it on a white gold chain precisely so that I wouldn’t have to take it off. I love that it is always with me and reflect on it several times throughout the day.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

I wear my scapular to bed all the time

Wearing a T-Shirt as sleep wear, is probably why it doesn’t get broken
