We actually call ours Catraception - if ya know what I mean. 😉 They will go where they like if you don’t close the door and lock them out!

I know whatcha mean 😛 We have a system, we’ll leave it to that 😊

This thread is so funny …

DW, 2 Shelties, 2 cats, 25 fish, and Me.

I tried having the fish in bed with us but it didn’t work out too well.

The cats wonder where they like, when they like. Those of us CAFers with kitties know there is nothing to be done about that other than acceptance and enjoying the experience of being a Cat’s Slave.

The Shelties sleep between us; Rascal is up top and Bandit towards the bottom. They have designated spots.

Since no one else is allowed to be in my bed I don’t really care if you do or don’t like it. You’re not invited in there so it’s none of your business. If it’s a breaking point in our relationship and you won’t come to my birthday because I let my dogs sleep in my bed then: Oh well, more birthday cake for me. Hey, maybe I’ll give your piece to the dogs, just before lights out 😉
Yep, my kitty has rendered all the interior doors in my house as superfluous. (A cat’s greatest enemy is a closed door.) He is an indoor only kitty so fleas and other parasites are not a problem.

He sleeps with me, sits on my lap and sometimes even helps me type my CAF posts. (You can always tell when he helps.)

However, I have managed to train him to stay off the kitchen counter and dining room table. But he will sit a feet and just stare at me while I eat my meal.

My pregnant sister has just entered her 2nd trimester. Just before she found out she was pregnant, her dog became her shadow. Wherever she goes, the dog is right there. She sleeps at the foot of the bed until my sister falls asleep, then goes to the doorway.

Makes you wonder…

Another friend of the family gave birth a few months ago. They have 2 huge german shepherds who are huge cuddle monsters. I was one of the first non-family people over to see the baby. The dogs like me.

I went over to the crib (in the living room), looked down and we realized that one of the dogs was right next to me, leaning, and the other had pushed her way between me and the crib. The dog was looking up at me, and was preventing me from standing right next to the baby.

Perhaps they both wanted to protect the youngest and most vulnerable member of the pack. After all, the little baby boy was the ‘pup’ of the Alpha Male in the house.

They always know. I had a miscarriage a few years ago at 5 weeks (my only known pregnancy) and before I even knew, the cats were jockeying for lap space and were following me everywhere.

That is probably one of the sweetest stories I’ve heard about pets.

Have you ever watched Miracle Animals on Animal Planet?? It is on Sunday mornings about 6am (we go to mass at 7am so I don’t get to watch all of it).

It is just soooo amazing the things that animals can do!!!

Love that last bit. 👍

Okay…over-affectionate pet owners–e.g. people who dress their animals or pay enormous vet bills to save Fifi–annoy me sometimes, but I think it’s important to remember that animals are here for a purpose, and that it’s their nature to want to be near to us at times. My in-laws used to have a wonderful (and huge) Newfoundland when my daughter was a little girl. In a brief period where we lived in the same house, that dog would actually check my daughter every night in bed and would watch her outside like a protetive nanny. If she tried to do something Rosie felt was risky, the dog would bark up a storm in disapproval.

As far as cats go, has the OP ever tried to keep one out of a warm bed on a cold night? Last night, in particular, our cat kept waking us up repeatedly. It’s in their nature to be insistent and want to be close to their masters. No matter how many times you kick them out, they will be back. C’est la vie.

I’d suggest the OP’s hang-up on sleeping with pets sounds more like a person who was deprived of good pets as a child and probably would benefit from a month or two on a working farm–or running sled dogs in Alaska. 🙂 I think there’s a real risk of losing a degree of common sense in regards to animals for those who have no exposure to rural life.

So true! I am about 5 months pregnant and my mini-dachshunds are like stalkers now. I told my husband that I think they know!!!

We have 5 cats and 1 dog (who thinks she is a cat). They are all indoor pets. Other than the hairballs that pile up behind the couch, you wouldn’t know we have this many if you came over our house. (and if you are looking for hairballs behind the couch, then that’s another thread entirely)

Our cats sleep with us, so does the dog. Yes we have to change the sheets every 2 or 3 days because of the fur, but I’d rather do that than go without the cuddles.

But that’s just me. To each his own…

PS: If I did this right, here is a pic of our dog Princess Leia (I know, I know 😛 ) snuggled up on the couch.

MSParrott, your dog is adorable!🙂

I live in a very tiny space - bed and living room all in one - and when my cat was alive, there was nothing I could do to keep her off the bed! Every night I would turn off the light and turn over to go to sleep and Bam! she would jump onto my shoulder and purr into my ear! After a few minutes of purring she would settle down at the bottom of the bed and stay there until morning when she would tell me it was her breakfast time (more reliable than any alarm clock).

She was a furry little moron, but I loved her…

My daughter solved the whole question of whether or not the kitten should be allowed to sleep with her by pointing out the first three letters in “Catholic.” This was after she had taken the scrawny stray kitten to the priest and gotten it blessed BEFORE bringing it home, figuring that once it was blessed I couldn’t say “no.” For obvious reasons, the highly amused priest is STRICTLY forbidden from blessing any more living creatures for my daughter without my express consent.

I know many people who are HUGE animal lovers. I don’t begrudge them for their emmotional attachments to their pets. However I do find offense when their love crosses the line (in my view). I particularly find it disturbing that many people actually share their beds with their pets. I do know of many cases in which people actually hug their pets while they sleep (whether it be for warmth or affection)…I find this wrong for a number of reasons: firstly, it is unhygenic to do so, and secondly, the act of sleeping with an animal elevates the animal to human level in a sense (which I feel God did not intend)…Wondering what your take is on this?
Not the same as yours, I fear.

And probably a lot of other pet owners let their pets sleep on the bed. Of course in the case of cats, they ‘let’ you share THEIR home. 😛

Too cute! Yes, us kids can be sneaky, and in your case pretty creative, when we see the sign
[SIGN]Free Kittens![/SIGN]

This post also reminds me of a silly name for Catholics my mother taught me when I was growing up; “Cat-lickers”. 🙂

I haven’t read all the replies but my responce is that there are some pet owners that go ‘over the top’ and not only is it unhealthy for them but it’s also unhealthy for the pet.

Like on those pet-trainer t.v. shows that tell the owners, no don’t let your pet sleep on your bed, or do other territorial behaviors because then you let them believe they are the pack-leader which can lead to other problems (sometimes very dangerous). Alot of owners let their pets do these things because they are sooooo cute and they like the attention from the pet, but owners really need to do what is best for the pet instead of fullfilling their own needs.

I love pets, and I would hate to damage them in a misguided attempt at showing them affection by giving them missappriopriated affection.

I also have a best friend who babies her dogs to the point that makes me incredibly uncomfortable to be around her and her dogs in the same room. She will cradle and coddle her pets as if they were actual infants but will totally freeze up and proudly admit she doesn’t like taking care of/interacting with actual infants when she’s around babies.

It’s no suprise to me that both of her dogs are painfully neurotic and unsocialized with visitors (growling, cowering, shivering and having tail between it’s legs). My friend takes this opportunity to ‘come to the rescue’ to her dogs and lavish attention to them to ‘calm’ them down. It’s really awkward to watch because you can tell she (pardon my term but it’s the only one I can think of) ‘get’s off’ on being the one to comfort them.

I’m not accusing any segment of pet-owners of being like my friend but I can see what this sort of coddling leads to and I also see the exagerated example of when a pet owner uses their pet to get comfort (through coddling) at the expense of the pet.

Sorry this is so long but it’s really the first time I’ve really written about this situation.

I do want to follow up with a recent uncomfortable example in my next post
