I was kneeling down whilst people went up to recieve communion, there was 4-5 people left waiting for the Priest to remove extra Host’s from the Tabernacle.

There was one young lady that recieved the Host and returned to her seat, her partner signalled for her to go back and recieve the Sacred Blood, but she did not want to (or it seemed from what I could see).

Whilst the Priest was clearing the Altar and the EMHC were cleaning the chalices, the young man frog marched the young lady up to the side of the Altar and spoke to the 2 EMHC (I do not know what he said), the EMHC shook her head and the young man marched the young lady back to their seat.

Not sure what to make of it.

I’m hoping the scenario was seen by enough people who know the young woman who will be in a position to encourage her to exit this relationship . . . I won’t go so far as to use the word “abusive,” as I obviously know nothing about the pair, but it certainly appears to be a power play on his part.

I have not seen them at Mass before, so they are probably visitors, but I agree that he was power playing over her.

In the words of Dear Abby, “MYOB, dearie.”
I agree. I note that police regard the chance of being injured when intervening in domestic disputes is higher than in any other activity. It is something that definitely should be left to the professionals.

Someone has to call the professionals-- right. If you saw someone beating another — would you MYOB or call the professionals.

What a sickening thing to happen. Not just abusive – though that’s bad enough. This is also a violation, or attempted violation, of the woman’s basic rights as a Catholic and a child of God.

And at Communion! At the holiest moment of the day! While the man also had received Communion! (Man, talk about eating and drinking his own destruction…)

I wish the ushers had done something.

You do realize–MYOB can lead to all kinds of evil to prevail.
I agree with this. I often see that Dear Abby quote used in forums. It’s interesting that Dear Abby made that quote while making a living from minding other people’s business! In fact, you could actually say that she encouraged gossip about who said what and did what in her latest column. She isn’t the source of wisdom that we should follow anyway.

This is really more of a matter of, “I was just sitting there minding my own business when…” (or kneeing there) It’s a wee bit hard not to notice something like that. The man made it other people’s business. Not exactly a normal way for someone to act at Mass.

It sounds like it was handled pretty good by the EMHC. If they hadn’t been in the church before it’s kind of hard for the priest to know how to contact them and work on resolving the situation. I would be disturbed by the incident and then think all I can do is pray. Sure makes you think.
