‘Slim victory’ for German right

Germany’s Christian Democrats, led by Angela Merkel, have narrowly won Sunday’s election, exit polls suggest.

However it is unclear whether Ms Merkel - who wants to introduce far-reaching reforms - has won enough support to form a government with Free Democrats. Observers say she could be forced into a grand coalition with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s Social Democrats.

Merkel’s CDU Suffer Shocker

Early results show that the conservatives, widely tipped to sweep into the chancellery with the pro-business Free Democrats, don’t have a majority. But neither do Schröder’s social democrats.

The CDU were said to have a minute lead over Gerhard Schröder's Social Democrats (SPD).
The first exit polls from Infratest Dimap put the CDU at 35.5 percent, slightly ahead of the SPD at 34 percent. The liberal Free Democrats, the preferred coalition partner of Angela Merkel’s CDU, had 10.5 percent of the vote while the Greens, the current coalition partner of the SPD, had 8.5 percent. The Left Party were close behind with 7.5 percent.

A more accurate, although provisional, result is expected in the early hours of Monday but if it is close, the final outcome could depend on one district in the eastern city of Dresden where polling has been delayed until Oct. 2 because of the death of a candidate.

Returns show that the conservatives, widely tipped to sweep into the chancellery with the pro-business Free Democrats, don’t have a majority. But neither do Schröder’s Social Democrats.

For several minutes, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder stood at the podium, unable to quiet the wild cheers and applause of the party faithful gathered at the social democrats’ Berlin headquarters.

He clutched his hands above his head in a victory gesture and, after finally calming his supporters made a claim for four further years as chancellor.

“I am certain that there will be a government under my leadership in the next four years,” Schröder said.

5 million of unemployed and people continue to trust in Schröder, it´s depressing.
