Bad day.

I have a hot-tempered sloppy brother in our family business
that often is late in filing stuff. He sat on my client’s tax return
for three months, that was supposed to be mailed. There may be penalties. Yes, it was my client mixed up with all the other tax return copies he sat on. Unfortunately, I told
the client I would not charge him $350 because of my screw-up (Well, my brother sat
on it, but I have to take responsibility). I had asked him three times if he
had mailed that return back in October, he said that he had. He lied, and it was in his stuffy box under the desk. So, I was angry and I told him I would reduce what I owed him by $350. It was only fair, and since we are both broke, partly due to his gross inefficiency, I am merely applying a credit to what I owe him.He then proceeded to blackmail me on my website. He said that he should have charged me $600 for my website, and
since I was playing this “game”, he called it, I should pay him $250. In other words,
he would reduce the $600 by the $350 I lost down to $250. We had no contract, he sat on my website for two years, and he verbally said pay me $250 initially for the website when I can. I had offered to satisfy that and some other monies
I owed him with the $350 I lost, but not before he turned to this blackmail on me.

The other part of this is that if I don’t pay him the $600 within 30 days, he will shutdown my website and kill my car club, since he has all the files. This really pisses me off. He screwed me over, and as usual, like a bratty 12 year old in a 30 year old body, victimizes me in the family business, costs me revenue and a potential client, and says he has been very nice to me so I owe it to him. He says for me to back off and we’ll be square, or pay up the $600. My Dad is a terrible listener and a poor communicator, and there is nothing I can do short of punching my brother’s lights out and going to jail, so what is the moral decision to make?

What happens when your dad retires? That doesn’t sound good, does it?

I think you need to explain the situation to your dad and then start looking for a new job if that doesn’t work (which it probably won’t). You are responsible and conscientious. You can do just as well or better elsewhere.

In the meantime, may I suggest the TV show Arrested Development? You and your brother are characters on the show.

This is beyond bizarre.

Give your brother the money…all of the money. Then remove him from administrator on all your websites, etc.

You were responsible for your client, and you made the mistake of trusting your brother. It sounds like you should of known your brother has a habit of ‘sitting on’ doing things (eg the website).

Consider it a life lesson and get out of the company.

Before you do anything, please consult an attorney and find out what your legal options are. Then, and only then have a talk with your father and see if he will intervene.
If he will not, or has no influence with your brother, then and only then pay him off and change your affairs as others have suggested. When this is done, find a way to sue him for every cent he has. Unfortunately, it is the only way people like him will learn a lessojn.

It takes two to tango on the 12 year old behavior dance floor. It does not seem your brother is the only one acting in this manner.

I suggest you start taking responsibilty for yourself, your clients, your website, and your business. Separate yourself from the “family business”, the unhealthy family dynamic, and do not ask your brother for favors in the future.

Frankly, I would not hire someone who was so careless with my tax return and then blamed it on his brother not mailing it. YOU were responsible for mailing it, and unless you personally put it in the mail you were derelict in your responsibility to your client.

Satan ‘attempting’ to work between Siblings (a suggestion is to ignore Satan’s works and walk away) from this situation in order to restore the Love and Peace between you Brothers xxxxxx

Cut your loss, pay him (or let him shut down the site or otherwise do his worst) and quit doing business with him. Obviously you two are not compatible in business. If you have to find another job, then do that. Tell him good luck with the family business.

I also agree with the advice of simply giving him back the whole money but not to do business with him since it doesn’t seem to work. Please, don’t forget to pray for him. Remember Jesus passion always. He did all the work for us and the suffering, neither less he forgave his persecutor. It is far easier to put our pride aside and forgive. Pray Jesus to help you to forgive him, and speak to God and let him know how you feel about this situation and then ask God to bring you peace.

Please pray for your brother and forgive him.

Love to you and blessings!

If he was just an employee you would have parted ways long ago. Family relationships should not get in the way of doing good business. Cut your losses and move on, either find a partner who will work with you or go into business for yourself.
