Does anyone have an English translation of the (I believe) Slavonic Sluzhebnik instructions for dealing with the visible transformation of the bread into the Flesh of Christ (what the West calls a Eucharistic Miracle)? Thanks and God bless.

Dear friend

I am not sure what it is that you are desiring. The Slujebnik or in Greek Ieratikon is a divine service book containing the texts pronounced by priests and deacons at the time of Divine Services. As a required object for completing by the priest the Holy Liturgy, this book can also be called Liturgicon. The are various liturgicons for different Orthodox churches in various times. The Slujebnik consists in its contents of the liturgies used in the Orthodox church: that of St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, and Presacntified Gifts. Also contains in itself the services of Evening and Morning Services for Holy Servers.

You can find such English translations of all liturgies from many internet sources including Vatican printers - at Grottoferrata whcih during Communist years produced Slujebnik for Orthodox churches. Vatican printing probably have in English. But this is for priests. You only want translation - such book would be very very expensive.

Thank you, brother, for the information. Yes, I am aware that the Sluzhebnik is a priest service book. I am most interested in the instructional bulletin or appendix which discusses Eucharistic Miracles and how to treat them; I don’t believe it’s a part of every service book, though.

I believe you may be hinting at either the *Orthodox Catechism of St. Peter Mohila or some clarifying notes he made in either the Euchologion or the Liturgikon *of the early 17th century. “Visible transformation” however is not the term that is used, but essentially “transubstantiation”.

Some sluzhebniki have a number of appendices (Vyedomou boudi, o ierei…) which cover this subject and similar - eg what to do if the chalice becomes polluted, what to do if the priest accidentally forgets part of the anaphora, what to do if the priest collapses/dies before, during/after the anaphora, etc etc etc.

I have it only in Slavonic; I doubt it has been translated into English, although it might be worth enquiring at one of the seminaries where, presumably, such matters are taught.

Many thanks to you both for your insights and help. So in essence, the appendices are similar to the De Defectibus of the Tridentine Missal. I will do as you suggest and seek a seminary. Thank you all and God bless. May you have a blessed Holy Week and Pascha.

I know this is a long-passed thread, BUT…there is an English translation of the Sluzhebnik for the Divine Liturgy printed by Jordanville, and it contains the appendix mentioned. It has the information asked about.

Thank you so much! Do you know where I can find it?

I have had the service book for years, but I never read that appendix.

It covers every possible circumstance no matter how unlikely. Thanks for giving me reason to re-read it.
