At my university some Gideons were giving out some small Green new testament/psalms/proverbs booklets. Is it ok for Catholics to read these and stuff? I like the small conciseness of them.

I have a small Catholic Bible that fits nicely in my purse. Keep your mind occupied with Catholic information. We all need to learn more about our faith.

There is nothing really “wrong” with it, but it’s not Catholic. Why not give it away and get a Catholic one?

I’ve seen Fr. Groeschel (on EWTN, in his Hope series) say he has a little protestant New Testament in his pocket, because of ease of use and easy storage in his pocket.

There are no notes in these little Gideon pocket bibles. The orange ones are NT/Prov King James Versions and I think the green ones are NT/Prov NIV translations. There is no problem with either (in the form presented by the Gideons). An NIV or KJV study bible is another matter entirely.

Scepter Publishing puts out a pocket NT in the old Confraternity version if you want to try older Catholic versions. Ignatius has a small NT/Psalms in the RSV, but it’s a little big for the pocket. I think Catholic Book Publishers puts out a pocket NT in the NAB version.

Someone gave me one of these (in an RSV translation) as I was boarding the bus to Air Force boot camp in 1976. I never read it, but kept it for years and years.

When I was undergoing my reversion to the Catholic Faith in 1984 or so (I was baptised as a baby but was not brought up in the Faith), I dug the little NT out of where I had it and devoured it. It played a key role in my reversion and subsequent love for Sacred Scripture.

If it is the same version I had (with no extraneous notes or bias) hang on to it. The NKJV is a good translation–much like the RSV. Catholic and Protestant NT’s have the same number of books so, by and large, God’s Word is God’s Word.

I remember that story, how inspiring it was. I have one of those Confraternity NT. The print is bold so it makes the small print readable. But, feel free to use the Gideon’s NT.

Why does any Catholic believe that Jesus if given the choice would choose to read and use a Protestant New Testament?

Did you know that the highly vaunted Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition, you name the apologist: Hahn, Rev. Pacwa, Akin, Staples, Ray, Shea, Sr. Moss, Burnham, Madrid, Grodi, Coffin, Keating, Cumbie, Rev. Corapi, Rev. Richards - one and all- use it, is a work of Protestant scholarship? The variants between the Protestant and Catholic versions are printed in each one. They are few and far between.

I wouldn’t be too quick to exclude Protestant bible translation, Catholic translation gave us the New American Bible and that ain’t exactly a gem. Personally, I would prefer a RSV NT to a NAB NT pretty much any day of the week.
