Small Group Study Recommendation

I’m starting a bible study in my parish with a group of four. Any recommendations for a good study plan to follow? I’d say this is an intermediate level group of four – however if it catches on maybe some beginners would start showing up.

Any suggestions?

I’d like a study that has some type of simple inexpensive workbook or worksheets to work from. We’ll be meeting face to face so I’ll need to work in

The group is a handful of guys that I just went through CHRP with. We were all given a New American Bible at CHRP, so that’s what we’ll work from.

The four guys are spiritually hungry, and may have the ability to get deep fairly quickly.

Any suggestions off of your list?
 
Scott Hahn’s St. Paul Center has Bible studiesfree on their website. All you have to do is print them out!

The Great Adventure is spectacular, too, but a little bit more pricey. You could contact the audio/visual resource center for your diocese and see if they have or are willing to get the DVDs for your parish to borrow/rent. That would significantly cut down on the cost.

EDIT: Just a general comment, it never hurts to contact the publishing company directly if a program interests you, even if it seems financially out of reach. You’d be surprised how often they are willing to work with you and cut you a deal. (It doesn’t hurt if you’re from a small, poor parish, either!)

Sure, I have two, depending on what you guys want to do. They are both from Emmaus Road books. The books themselves are relatively cheap (around $10), and they have a chapter to read during the week, plus questions for discussion and reflection at the end of each chapter. It works out to a bout a 9 or ten week study. They both use the RSV-CE but I think they will work with the NAB as well. You’ll also need a Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The first is a topical study on developing the virtues for men:

The second is a study on the Gospel of Luke:

Both of these would be a great way to start out your group, and when you are done, there’s plenty more where that came from!
 
Follow up - we had our first meeting today to just discuss logistics and study format. Here’s what the guys in the group want to do:
  • Use a resource that provides some discussion questions
  • Have a link to the Chatechism so we can see the relationship to Church tradition
  • Progress through a book and not spend an exceptional amount of time on single verses. The guys want to eventually finish a book and move on to another.
  • Start with John’s gospel
Do you know of resources that meet this description? I did a fast web search and found the Come and See series. This seems to meet the desires above.

Come and See is a great series published by Emmaus Road (the publishing arm of Catholics United for the Faith). I think that would be a great place to begin! Very user-friendly and faithful.

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: John would be another possibility. They have study questions to go with each chapter, in addition to the great footnotes and topical essays. It isn’t really keyed into the Catechism, though.

If you’re interested in Scripture study, you could try Understanding the Scriptures by Scott Hahn. It’s a textbook, so there is no shortage of questions at the end of each chapter. It is very much keyed to the Catechism, and each chapter includes passages of some of the early Church Fathers, or Doctors of the Church. You could make your way through the whole Bible with this book! 🙂

I got “Come and See - David and the Psalms” and was greatly pleased by it. So much so that I got “Come and See - The Synoptics Gospels” and was equally displeased with it. It spent too much time comparing and contrasting what each Gospel said about the common events in their repsective Gospel. But it spent no time on the message being conveyed. On a plus side, it does give historical background to many of the scenes (Jewish traditions or Israel historic locations).

I’m very interested in their "Gospel of John as well as the “Apostles and Acts” and will soon get one of these.
 
Final update here. In the end I’ve gone wiht the Steve Ray study on John. It has a great blend of study questions to varying depth, cultural references, language references, theology teaching, catechism, and papal teaching.
