Small signs

Oh I was watching something on EWTN and I absolutely couldn’t stand watching people getting down and “worshipping”…uh, bread

I was thinking they know better 😉

Wow, you guys MUST have a lot of faith to think he goes in bread without making it into idolatry, no offense.:o
To go from agnostic to pondering the Eucharist is a big jump. Start with the basics. If you are the slightest bit curious about Christianity (which based on the fact that you’re on here, I’d say you are) you should read “Yes or No: Straight Answers to Tough Questions about Christianity”.

Well, I don’t know for SURE if God made the universe because I am not sure if he exists, therefore, our existence doesn’t really give me the answer.
How about: however the universe got here, that’s how God did it!

😉

But, you know, this bread thing is really a big thing. I can’t remember who said it (some famous guy), but the quote was something like: of all the religions, only Catholicism actually believes something. It’s easy to believe that there is a God. But believing that bread and wine ACTUALLY turn into body and blood - that’s serious faith!"

Regarding agnostics, I have a problem with that. The reason is that with so many religions to choose from - literally hundreds of world views - I can’t believe that someone can’t find at least one that fits more or less comfortably in order to explain what science has not yet understood.

M31, it’s evident from many of your threads that what you want is an irrevocable sign. We are truly sorry, but miracles won’t occur just to give you proof. God made the laws of nature and prefers not to break them often. My suggestion would be to look into the arguments for the existence of God. Specifically, I’d suggest you to read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and to listen to a podcast off of iTunes by Peter Kreeft called arguments for the existence of god which shows what the name states and another called desire which goes deep into a certain argument I believe might appeal to you. Beyond that, there isn’t a way to call God out of Heaven to prove He’s there. You’ll have to have faith and follow the evidence.

Blacksword;8201528:
I beg your pardon but I had no bad intentions. And tell me where in my post I was having a nasty tone or trying to start an argument? I am not ridiculing anything here! Don’t get so defensive.

See? That’s the problem with typing words because you obviously can’t HEAR the tone of the person!

I have no idea why you’re biting my head off when I have no clue about your religion. Ignorant? Yes. But do I deserve to get my head bitten off by a Catholic? Uh, no! If you had NO faith, you would understand. Now if I was Catholic and said that, yes, you could bite my head off. So you really have no right to say that to me. I mean, I apologize if what I said offended you but you are going a little too far!

Sure, whatever you say. If God can put a feather he can appear in bread in the Eucharistic Adoration. Yes, whatever you say. But I don’t know if he’s there or not BECAUSE I have no faith like you do. Now, you’re not going to get offended for me saying I have no faith, are you?

If you feel proud for biting my head off, I’m sorry.
M31, of course I don’t feel proud for “biting your head off”. However, you are correct in that it’s hard to tell a person’s tone through typing of words. I apologize for “biting your head off”, but if you read your post, I’m sure you can see how it sounds sarcastic. For instance, in this post to which I’m responding, you state “Sure, whatever you say…” Doesn’t that sound a little sarcastic? It appears to be sarcastic because I’m quite sure you aren’t going to start taking my word for it. So what am I to think? That’s what I’m talking about. I am sorry for my tone if you are truly ignorant of the Catholic faith, but it sounded to me like you were making fun.

Why does this say quoted by Blacksword? I didn’t type this.

If God is not going to show proof that he exists with big signs, why not small signs?

For example, what if I were to try to pray ," God, if you exist, then let me find a white feather next to my car on the ground or in front of the front door" then if I find a white feather in those locations, then I might know he exists.

Can’t he do something like that?
What is the logical limit of what you ask?

You say “Jump God, Jump! Prove to me you exist! Come on, God, you’re supposed to say ‘how high?’. JUMP!”

First, you have your relationship with God backwards. We find God gives to us in our need, when we approach Him in humility. You do not command God. You do not have the right or authority to demand miracles for belief.

And what if you get your white feather? What’s to stop you from thinking it was just a coincidence? And when you explain it to someone else, what’s to stop THEM from thinking it was just a big coincidence and that you’re a loon? If I told you that I had prayed for a white feather and found one like that, would you become a Christian? What about some other small signs that God has acted in MY life… do you believe MY signs?

So the natural conclusion is that God needs to jump to the marching orders of every person alive in order to prove to them (and assauge their egos) that He exists. That sort of pride is incompatible with adoration anyway.

As someone that is just returning to the church after several years I prayed for signs many time. I was impatient and looking for obvious signs like the feather as well, all the while missing sign after sign from God. It was not until I learned to slow down and listen that I saw and heard, there were signs all around me.

**From today’s 1st reading,

1 Kings 19:11-13:**

11
1 Then the LORD said, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD–but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake–but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
12
After the earthquake there was fire–but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
13
When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Sometimes we have to listen for the tiny whispering sound.

I will be praying for you.

I loved this reading. Have to get out the Bible because I really want to read the rest of this.

Hi M31,
You said you would like for God to send you a white feather. Well He has done better than that. St. John spells it out what has been sent to you.

“For God has sent his Son into the world so that thru him the world might be saved.
… that tho the light has come into the world men have shown that they prefer darkness
to the light, because their deeds were evil. And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, for fear his actions should be exposed…”

I just have a thought I’d like to share…

Why no white feathers? Because God asks us to have faith and gives that faith to us willingly when we ask Him for it. It is a gift He gives us. If we have faith, we already know that God is communicating with us in MULTIPLE ways (sacraments, Eucharist, others, reading scripture, homilies, in prayer, through Priests…)

For those who do not have faith, God does not force Himself upon them. God knows (because He’s smarter than we are) that the little white feather will not be sufficient and will not satisfy those without faith.

So God fortifies those with faith and not those without faith.

I am glad you posted here. If you want a sign from God, ask for a meaningful sign that you can not deny. Ask, if He is there, that He will draw you to believe in Him. The result will be life changing for you.
