Small tech school vs big university

Are small technical colleges ok to go to? Or do you have to go to a big university? I would rather go to the small tech school here because its small and it wont put me in debt and the degrees only take two years. I am looking at taking management…would a 2 year management degree from a tech school be ok to make a solid career on?

It kind of depends on your career choice and on the company you work for. You also have to look at the degree earned.

Some employers want an employee with a general education as well as an emphasis in some area (such as management). Such companies are likely to pay more for an employee with a bachelors or higher degree. This is often the case with larger corporations.

Other employers are really only interested in what the employee knows about the specific job area. Such employers may be interested in a certificate in some area and not really care about a traditional degree. This is more likely the case with small companies.

It really varies. If you are looking to land with a big company, a big school is important. It sounds like you would be perfectly happy in a small company, so a small school with a two year degree could easily work. More and more experience is very important. Going to a Tech or Community College might allow you to work part time and gain that experience.

Do what makes you happy - in the long run. Starting at a two year school allows the undecided to see what is out there before making a huge investment. I did it that way.

Keeping of your debt is a good thing. You may also want to plan on possibly transferring later in order to get a your bachelor’s degree. Factors that you may consider for that is how credits will transfer.

No matter what, I’d say keep your debt under control, since it will keep your options more flexible. Then figure out what you need to get what you want. Try to figure out what qualifications you need for a job in that field, then work to try to fulfil them. Try to see what fits you best, and remember even if you go down the wrong path you can get back on the right one. (Especially if your debt is under control.)

If you need to have a degree from a big university, you’ll have a jump on it. You may lose some credits though, check out how well they transfer to other schools. That can also be more if you go to a university not around the college.

Thanks for the advice. All I want is enough of a degree to have a good solid career (with out going in debt). I want to be able to make enough so that when I find the right girl to marry and start a family with I can support the family. And be able to support the family on my income so that if my future wife wants to be a stay at home Mom she could. Could I do that with a two year management degree from the tech school? If I went there I probably would also get a two year degree in other parts of business or something for a back up after I got the two year management degree…

For a long time I thought I wanted to be a mechanic. But I had people tell me that you cant make a good career and support a family as a mechanic. So I figured I better look at other careers. Alltho I do like working on cars.
